ok, so ive got an intermittant screaming v-belt issue that im having a hard time sorting out.

It dosnt do it when the vehicle is in reverse, it is worst right at start-up, dosnt do it at idle (98% of the time, sometimes it will do it but only for a split second and then stops), but when i put it in D, and accellerate, the thing screams like bloody murder, i let off the throttle, it stops, get back on the throttle, screams bloody murder. Once i get past around 25mph, and let off the throttle, then, once i get back on, its quiet. no noise. I can cruise at highway speed without it acting up.

the only real problems with the truck as of right now.... the radiator is weeping, and a little corroded at some of the fittings, and the transmission is probably in need of a rebuild, a believe the pump is dying and as a result low line pressure has probably started to burn the clutch packs.

other than that it runs like a top, starts right up, runs smooth.

I have also already replaced the power steering pump, as i felt that was the most likely cause of the belt scream, and it made the noise sometimes when the steering was being worked side to side, or when i was hard on the brakes (hydroboost). I did not however replace the Power steering lines, or cooler.

My next guess is that for some reason, my rebuilt alternator is the cause. The scream seems to be coming from the driver side of the engine accessories, which would be the power steering pump or alternator, but its so loud and peircing, that i cant tell which it is. Ive already had both alternators rebuilt by the same shop. One did need to be rebuilt again because a connection came loose and caused a short.

Ill probably take the alternator in and have it tested just to see, but thought id ask on here first.

OH and the last thing, the belt on this alternator may be too long, i replaced the belt used by the PO with one the same size, but when i tightened it down i realized the alternator was at its full range of adjustment. so maybe im not getting enough tention on the belt, causing it to slip under load???

Not getting enough tension on the belt would be my guess. I am having the same problem and am thinking about going with a smaller belt.

yeah just noticed i didnt have a sig yet, so i fixed that.... to answer the question....

1986 M1009 Blazer, non- turbo 6.2L, TH400 tranny, NP208 TC, 10 bolt axles front and rear. <78,000 original miles, per carfax.

I didnt even think about the waterpump. About a year ago i did have to run stream water in the truck after a battery came loose while wheeling and took out a fitting on the radiator. I did a full drain of the system and installed a new radiator, but did not flush the system. I drove it probably about 30 miles on the stream water.

as to the width of the belt, i installed belts that were the same as the ones i replaced, but then again, i have no guarantee that the PO had the correct belts on there, as evidenced by the belt apparently being too long. how do i dertermine which width of v-belt is correct? ive only ever heard about deep-v or shallow-v belts.

I do not think I am the guy to tell you wich belt bc I only use the metric system and do not remember the numbers anyway :o
But if I remember correctly the standard belts here are 11 mm and the ones on my M1008 is 13mm wide.
Someone else will know :wink1:
