I've have the Viair 550 for a year and a half with no problems.. I've never had to use it as heavily before as I do now. For the 3rd friggin' time, the damn relay and fuse have melted (killing the current) just when I'm airing up the 3rd tire. So as of this morning, I have no OBA

I regret this product so much, all it's good for is airing up damn birthday balloons and "swimming pool" lounge rafts.

I'd rather replace it with a York... no friggin' electrical wiring, no friggin' fuses or relays to troubleshoot each time it goes haywire, if it doesn't melt first.

I guess oil is becoming my best friend :D

OK, rant over.

Power tank is great, til it runs out.

Get the york, and a 3 gallon tank... you'll never look back.

X'S 2, no better system out there.

Hmm. ive been thinking of going with VAIR. Im a lil concerned about your issues. ANy chance it could jus be shaldy wiring on your part, not trying to point fingers, but 9 outa 10 times its the end users fault, but not saying you didnt get a bad kit or whatever. Im running a power tank now, but would like to have something a lil more realiable and long term.

Can you clarify this sentence a little further  ???

Sorry, it was more of a figure of speach than anything, Meaning I want CONSTANT air available. The tank is about as realiable as you can get, but runs out over time. etc .

Just curious, fairly new to the chevy crowd, but been doing jeeps for a while now. It was fairly common with my XJ's to take the stock york or sanden AC compressor, rip out the condenser and all that and turn it into OBA system, and quite cheap as well. Is that not something fairly commonplace with the stock AC compressors on these trucks?

York and a big tank. I can air my 42s, 1 per cycle of compressor.

I want a york but what pisses me off is the damn expensive serpantine pulley.
You can find some motorcraft york compressors that have the serp belt setup... just gotta go diggin! ;)

And the regulator on top freezes in cold weather...

But at least your laptop loads Winders now :wink1:

Thanks, Paul :D I gotta load Itunes and albums back in and I'm much happier with the 100GB hard drive you put in.

I still haven't bought the Verizon wireless card so I'm not using it in my truck just yet. :wink1:

Don't go that route... Keep the power tank and get a York :D
I'd rather save the battery for other purposes, like the winch and rock lights and power outlets for laptops, etc.

The problem isn't the electrical connections; it's the heat from the compresser running constantly to air up the 37's... those wires do get real hot when working a load like that. Each tire takes almost 4 minutes to air from 15 psi to 35 psi. I think that's pretty harsh for a Viair.

I think 4 minutes per tire is wayyyyy too long anyways.

I've heard York is great as long as the oil is frequently checked upon and yes, they do leak but they will still kick a$$. I'd rather deal with oil than deal with electrical.

Not only that, but I have sacrificed ZERO room in my cab and bed to have OBA (unlike carrying a powertank). The tank for my OBA is mounted under the bed, and I have protected connections under the hood and at the rear of the truck... Makes it nice when the guy in front blows a bead, then the guy behind you does... Oh, I can also run an impact with no issues.

York wins, hands down, IMO.

Ditto. I've used the stock York AC compressors in a couple of installs and it will hold 80-90psi no problem. Air 35's up in a minute or two, run impacts and all that. I had an 8gal tank on mine with a switch and pressure guage in the cab to keep it in check. Also works great with a set of train horns :P

I missed this post... I'm gonna keep my stock a/c (I finally got it working!) and have the York installed in the drivers side next to the alternator. I remember seeing a kit from Kilby Enterprises so you won't have to sacrifice the a/c.

EDIT: http://www.kilbyenterprises.com/KE-26710-K.htm

I know it's pricey.... but I can make another budget to save for it. Or I can downsize the stuff I don't need and re-use the hoses, pressure switch, check valve, etc. that I already have. Not sure if buying parts separate is cheaper than buying the whole kit but I'll look into it. Too damn hot and too damn lazy to search the yards anyhow.
