I think I may have found my axles.:D
$1500 for the pair a good price?

They are supposedly out of a 86 M1028, the Dana 60 front has a posi unit driven by clutches(not sure of the brand). The 14FF rear is open and they both have 456 gears.

I was trying to do a little research but was getting confused with all the sources I was finding on google. Which Dana 60 is the strongest Ford, Dodge, or Chevy?

They all have their quirks. GM is low pinion but the knuckles are stronger then Ford, Dodge has a single brake line down to the axle and then it splits plus Dodge had some different hubs. Ford in high pinion has the best gears but the knuckles are weaker, and so on. $1500 is a little steep seeing how the rear is open and should have a Detroit. The posi in the front is junk as far as posi units go.

If they are M1028 the rear should have the detroit, if it does I guess it's not too bad of a price, you could do better but it's OK.
If the guy took the detroit out and is selling as an open unit then run, they are not worth that much.

way too much money. i usually sell standard 1-tons, srw, open diffs, 4.56 for $900.

$1,500 is not a complete rip-off, but it's not a good deal either especially considering it is an open diff in the rear, and the front limited slip is worthless IMHO (only slighlty better than an open diff...but I would pay less for it then an regular open diff).

Around here you can buy an open diff 14FF all day for $100-$150, so you are basically paying $1,300-$1,400 for the front D60 with a crappy limited slip....the only thing you are getting is 4.56 gears which are harder to find in the junkyard vs. 4.10's, but that's not that big of a difference.

For the question about which D60 is the strongest/best, I guess it depends on why you are asking the question. If you are simply wanting to swap a front D60 into a Chevy/GM truck than the Chevy version is the best because it's a bolt-in operation. The Dodge is similar but not a true bolt-in to a Chevy truck. Ford versions are in no way a direct bolt-in, but can be done with other modifications.

Now if you are looking for a front axle for some other project and the "bolt-in and go" part isn't an issue, then there are other things to look at. The Ford version is generally considered the best because of the high pinion ring and pinion (better driveshaft angles, and more gear strength), but the knuckles are known to the be the weakest. Chevy version has the standard low pinion gears, but better knuckles. Dodge's are a little narrower and most had external lock-out hubs that aren't considered as good.

Well I haven't bought them yet he has gotten 3 offers and declined them all. Wish I knew how much was offered. The thing is I have had a hard time trying to find one around where im at, not even sure where to look. I can pick this one up at his house (35 miles away) so no huge shipping charges. It really is a tough call and wouldn't mind paying less around 1100 or 1200 but I cant find any anywhere else.:( I know this aint the for sale section but if any one close by has a pair to sell im interested for a 4.56 pair posi or not. I think i may offer him 1000 see if he takes it, im kinda desperate for one.

don't be in such a hurry. keep an eye on craigslist. buy a whole truck for less then 1k, and then you have more spare parts/ stuff to sell.

Here in Caslifornia a Chevy D60F fetches 1200.00 all day long regardless of gearing, a 14ff can be had for 100.00-150.00 and usually is either 3.73 or 4.10's. If 4.56 gears are what you want then i would offer him 1200.00 and then bargain from there if need be. I think if he is asking 1500.00 and you offer him 1000.00 that's a slap in the face and he may just decide not to sell to you period.

For a Chevy D60 the strongest would be about 1985 and newer which has the non neck down inner axles.

I had a 1028 with the posi front and some 35" tire, I wouldn't say it's junk! it'll keep both tires spinning as long as you keep it straight. I was always surprised at just how much it did come in handy. better than nothing!

ohh and that rear should have a detroit! otherwise it's not worth that price!!

They are in Mechanicsburg Pennsylvania and they are on ebay as a buy it now or best offer. I was looking at the government liquidation surplus auction maybe I can get a deal on a lot of 6 whole trucks. I doubt it but maybe its worth the shot.
