Sensors and sending units

The brass fitting should go to the hole on the back of block, then sender into brass.

Right but the issue is neither the brass fitting or the sender fits in that hole and as you can see they’re both the same size as the old sender. I think @Bent77 is right I think I just need an adapter. Probably 1/8 male to 1/4 female. I just don’t remember there being an adapter like that before.

"most" GM oil pressure sensors have 1/8" NPT thread (up until 1987 anyways,I'm not familiar with what newer engines may use)...

I know GM has several different sensors depending on the oil pressure gauge, one for a 0-60 PSI gauge is calibrated differently that a 0-80 PSI gauge sending unit, and ones for an idiot light wont work with a gauge..
Catalog listings were often "wrong" too,oil pressure sending units often had to be looked up for a different year or application or use the "illustrated guide" at the back of the catalog,or cross reference an oem number, to look up the correct one..

Interesting, well I picked up a 0-60 one which is what my gauge is so if I can get an adapter that works i suppose it will be fine.

I also remembered after posting, when the "new body style" GM trucks came out in '88,they had computers and EFI,and they had another oil sending unit down near the oil filter (for the fuel pump or computer?)..
I recall many oil pressure sending units I sold coming back as "wrong" when in fact the "other" one was the correct one..the listings were incorrect in the catalog..took Standard/Blue Streak awhile to figure that out and correct it..

---it was about that time I was nearing the end of my parts counterman days and also we started using computer listings rather than catalogs--but we never threw any catalogs away, especially the oldest ones, this allowed our store to locate and sell many "antique" parts others could no longer look up by application in a computer listing..

The late 80's to early 90's was a tough time to get the right parts for GM trucks with them changing the "C-K" designation to "V" and "R",and the fact the 1 tons,Blazers and Suburbans remained square bodies up until 1991,while the "new" cab style came out in '88..

Yeah it all can get very confusing, I had an oil pressure switch on the passenger side down low on the block. Plus the sending unit up top. Also my k5 is an 88 but with an 86 motor. But the heads are a different year so it’s been fun trying to find all the right parts and figuring out what I do and don’t need.

If that's 1/4" and not 1/8", it MIGHT clear if you put it in above the oil filter. Should have a plug in it now. To my knowledge GM always used 1/8" at the back of the block on the SBC at least, never heard of a factory thread adapter there. But you'd have to remember removing it if it was there in any case.

Not sure those brass tubes are available repro/aftermarket, if they are it would eliminate having to try and run it above the filter, and plugging that upper port.

Yeah I remember putting in a new plug there at the oil filter when I rebuilt the motor, don’t remember taking one out though. I’m definitely confused as to how and where the sending unit was hooked up before but since the hole by the oil filter is plugged I’ll try to make the hole by the distributor work.
