I just got back from vacation and saw this thread. Being an FJ40 owner, I thought I'd throw in my $.02.
FJ40's were imported into the US for many years (1958-1982). However they are very prone to rust and there aren't many out there that don't have rust issues. There are a bunch of companies offering replacement body panels. In fact you can buy a complete aftermarket body in fiberglass, aluminum or steel
As such, an FJ40 with a nice original body will command a premium price. For example, I paid $5K for a 1978 with a seized engine. It was all original and in cosmetically very poor condition.
I paid less than half that for my 1986 Blazer which ran well. It's interior was in excellent shape, also. Both vehicles had spent their entire lives in California and their bodies were excellent.
