You wan't a light ticking noise (like a sewing machine)
You don't want a loud clacking noise....
 
I/we (justhorsinaround) just adjusted his last night, it's a hard tap when you loosen them up, then tighten them up until quiet, and then just a bit more. We did that with his and it's actually pretty nice, "sounds like a Chevy" /forums/images/graemlins/doah.gif /forums/images/graemlins/woot.gif
 
Runs like a Chevy too. Worked out pretty well. 4xCrazy forgot to mention that if you tighten them to far the engine will bog cuz on account the valve isn't closing all the way. Loosen them up and try again. /forums/images/graemlins/woot.gif

Sounds, good, yeh i finished almost everything today, tomorrow i just have to drop the distributor and hook up the wires, then we'll see what happens....

OK THIS IS WHAT HAPPENED.
Distributor Timing is very screwed up. When I started the truck she had problems starting up, i turned the distributor counterclockwise about 30degrees. Then I started her up again, and she started and idled at 2000rpms. So I ran outside and turn the distributor clockwise about 15degrees and it idled abotu 1100rpm. But I pressed on the gas, and it started bogging out. Finally I shut the truck off and I tried turning the distributor clockwise a lil bit more and I broke one of the frigen bolts that the distributor cap bolts to the distributor with.
So most likely im going to buy a new distributor and drop it in and guess with the timing.

However, the method of using the HAYNES manual with the rocker arm nuts. I used the method of spinning the pushrods until there was a little drag and then turning it another 3/4 turn. It worked because I cannot hear any clicking noise and when the truck was idle at 1100rpm it sounded good for the second before I pressed on the gas.

Any comments, solutions, guesses, I would love to hear them!

This is the method I use to install a distributor correctly. I hope nobody has a problem with it.

1. Remove the number 1 cylinder spark plug.

2. Place your thumb over the spark plug hole.

3. Have a second person turn the ignition key for only a second to crank the engine, until on one of those turns you feel the compression stroke blow on your thumb. Then stop there.

4. Place a socket on the harmonic damper bolt, and line up the timing mark on the harmonic damper with the timing chain cover timing tab '0' mark.

4. Install distributor with the Rotor cap pointing at the number one spark plug wire. If you look in your manual, you will find a diagram that tells you where to position your rotor with the number 1 spark plug wire.

5. Install distributor cap.

6. Connect spark plug wires 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 clockwise on the distributor cap.
 
I actually used that method. #1 cylinder at TDC, With the rotor pointing at the #1 spark plug on the cap. It did not start. Then I turned the distributor about 1/4 turn counterclockwise. And it start but idled at 2000rpm.

The only reason i need to reset it is b/c when i press on the gas the truck feels like it's gonna bog out.
 
Not a problem with your writeup, but apparently a little refining can be done, by using a timing light.

Hook up the timing light to the #1 plug wire after you find TDC, turn the key to run, then turn distributor until the timing light fires. You know then that the distributor is dead on.

I haven't tried this (yet) but either today or tomorrow I will be. I don't see why it won't work, I was told this "method" by someone that has proven his engine intelligence over and over again.
 
The timing light method should work. When the light flashes it will indicate the compression stroke on the cylinder that the pick up is connected too, which is what you are looking for.

The three problems I can think of that delirious is having is either you are somehow not getting your distributor in correct, the firing order is off, or maybe your timing chain is not lined up properly.

To properly line up your distributor you must drop it in one tooth counter clockwise of the number one wire because of the angle cut of the distributor worm gear. Also, you must physically push down on the distributor while giving the engine a quick one second turn of the starter motor, in order for it to drop in and completely seat properly. If none of this works then I suspect your timing chain is not lined up properly. Did you happen to install one of those dual roller timing chains (like a Cloyes) with three different timing marks?
 
Yes, I was told by a friend that a timing light is the best method for this.
Well, lol, i was happy with it running atleast so i decided to start her up again and it idled at 1500rpm. so i turned it off again and started her up again and it ran at 200rpm so i pressed on the gas and it didn't bog out so i continued until it hit 1000rpm and then it started going back down with my foot on the gas pedal. Then I saw a flame come out the the throttle body, which made me conviced that the timing is definetly off cuz the spark plug is firing with the intake valve open, which caused a flame through the intake manifold and out the throttle body. I'm just hoping now that i didn't mess up the fuel injectors. I have extra's but i dont know if they are good.

Lol, it's been fun putting these new heads on and I appreciate all the help. I've learned so much more about engines by this job. I really want to get this done by memorial day weekend so I can bring it to the Jersey Shore and drive around on the beach!
