Ditto. Wouldn't hurt to check that attitude at the door every now and then. Gotta keep in mind that building 'wheeling rigs is not a competition. It's supposed to be fun. I hope that when you come to Neil's next Midwest K5 Thing, you are nicer in person than you appear to be from the keyboard.

lots of people that probably "deserve" a cover shot arent on a mag cover simply because they have never contacted a mag to do a shoot. Its pretty much on the owner to seek out the mag, not the other way around. if the owner doesnt care if they are on the cover enuff to contact mags, why should we? besides, sometimes mags like to feature rigs that are sorta early on in the developement stages as a way to show people with stock rigs that they can have a pretty capable truck without having to build the $85895453598537984 comp dream machine. so they put a few 1/2 ton rigs in there, some relatively plain jane jeeps etc etc etc. Makes perfect sense to me. Sure, if it was up to me, every rig in these mags would be super hardcore... but a VAST majority of mag readers arent into the superhardcore stuff, and magazines are a BUSINESS so they have to cater to what people will buy. Im content with the coverage we have now, its not bad... especially if you compare it to the 80s... yuck! bling everywhere! look! another 1/2 ton rig with chromed leaf springs and 6 shocks per wheel crossing a shallow stream! I'd take the part mild / part wild combo mags we have now any day.

Ouch. Well, in that case Tyler, flame-suit on. Maybe we'll get the prized red-white-and-blue defense next. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I agree with the variety of machines in the mags, I don't want to see ONLY extreme machines, it's very good to show all kinds, that encourages more people to tackle a simple build up, and some to go extreme.
I just think that a cover shoot should be the most innovative of their inventory in the mag, but I notice they usually go with the one that has some flash to sell the mag easier.

I know when I saw the 6x6 Dodge a last year, if I hadn't a subscription I would have bought that one, it was unique, done nice, and it looked awesome.

Nope, I just read that one and kept going. At least I know what he really thinks now.

Good. I don't know you personally. I still hope that when you come to Neil's next Midwest K5 Thing, you are nicer in person than you appear to be judging from many of your previous posts. Again, let's not forget the fun part of building and 'wheeling. Enough for now, I have a 10-bolt front axle to chrome /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif

I hope I get to come. If my D60 isn't chromed out, my spinners with beadlocks aren't mounted, and if I can't fix my bent curb feeler from rolling over, I won't get to go. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I just was disappointed that I couldn't see something more of the vision that I've got for my truck.

Tim, you have to admit - your wording is sometimes not very well thought out. Like the statement above. Heres 5 ways how it could be taken in context.... And remember J/K.

1. I didn't like the truck on the cover because it is not as good as I had hoped mine might be some day. /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif

2. My truck is in no way close to as capable as this truck, but since I have "friends" who have killer trucks, I can justify my wanting or needing to feel like mine is as good as this one...

3. I like Fords....

4. I am a mudtruck guy with very little experience offroad and now that my new friends have shown me the light, I will now hope to build a rockcrawler type truck that will in 10 years not be as capable as this truck shown all dalled up on the cover.

5. I haven't even came close to achieving nor spending the kinda dough this fella has, nor do I have any Magazine contacts and know nothing about Magazines in general other than they have colorful pictures.

Take it however you may. I was a nice guy and didn't give you too much hell for hijacking my post. As far as Magazine coverage - Orion hit the nail on the head. Its about being in the right place at the right time. I know, you've heard that from Grandpa all your life, but its true. Take my experience with Ken Brubaker of Fourwheeler...

The Long Story...

I was (and still am) a Nobody who had one successfull years worth of Midwest K5 Thing series of runs under my belt. Steve Frisbie had attended the Springfield Missouri Jambo in his non wheeling show truck wannabe (in your eyes) Coil Springed M1009 with non Dana 60 and a large smile on his mug. Ken Brubaker was at this event and featured several Missouri trucks including Steve Frisbie's 85 M1009. Frisbie called me and asked if I wanted to attend the elite few to watch the photo shoot. I couldn't attend, but Layne did (K5BLT4FUN). In fact, heres how one tidbit of CK5dom helped this equation - Layne actually spotted Frisbie into the "Cover Shot" position. They had been "posed" alot during the day, but decided to play around after the shoot. Layne got the K5 so twisted up, and said "Theres your cover shot" alerting the press and they snapped it. Anyway, this long rant will eventually get to the point.

Months after the Cover shoot, we were headed to the Indy Jambo - again, non wheeling people like us going to a jambo to scope out the latest in chrome diff covers and $40k paintjobs. Acutally, with the birth of Missouri Offroad Outfitters, we have travelled alot promoting his products and Jambos seem to generate a good number of people. I also use these to probe for new Vendors to sponsor our Runs. Frisbie enters the rockcrawling Comp's at this Jambo - so there, thats your hardcoreness you are looking for, I have it we are hardcore! We were driving up to the "staging lanes" and saw Brubaker riding in a golf cart. Brubaker spotted the yellow beast and said "Hey Steve" and walked over. I then put on my entreprenuer cap and went to work with my "gift of gab". I explained to Brubaker about the Midwest K5 Thing series of runs. He seemed very interested and told me a quick blurb about him wheeling in a First Gen as a kid. He cited many things like "Blazers are so cool", etc... This eventually became the reason for the sidebar in our Blazer Blitzkrieg writeup. At that time Brubaker was a freelancer - he gave me his business card and we shook hands and left it as a "will contact you later" type of transaction. I gave it the typical "two weeks then call" type deal. We stayed in touch for nearly 8 months - emailing and calling. Finally, Brubaker called and said he had went to work for Fourwheeler and could possibly get us a spot in the magazine. We here at CK5 picked a date and it met his shed-ule and we were set. You have to do more than that...

I called and arranged hotel lodging for Brubaker in Disney, Oklahoma - where the run was to be held. Things like this are what get you noticed. You need "the Gift of Gab" as Frisbie always say's about me.

At these Jambo's, I take time to stop by vendor booths who have sponosored us in the past and thank them. I stop by the normal's: Superlift to gab with Trent McGee another longtime supporter of our runs and a Blazer owner. I almost always run into Ken Brubaker and chat with him if he has time. The one thing I NEVER DO - is ask him "when are you going to do a feature on my Junk". I remember hearing Brubaker mention he might single out a few K5's during our Spring K5 Thing - Disney run to do a Feature Article (Cover Shot). The weekend went by too fast and he didn't have time - BUT! Does this make any of us in the Blazer Blitzkrieg writeup loosers? Does it seem as if, we are unworthy of a cover shot? Hell no! You should have seen the trails we were running down there - they make the "Orange Trail" look like a sunday drive!

My philosophy on wheeling is far different than yours Tim. I am not a braggart, I don't swell up when people talk good or bad about my rig. I don't mouth openly about cover trucks or about how Fourwheeler has show trucks. And most importantly, I try hard not to offer negativity in any way unless its constructive to this site.

One thing you might not have noticed since you are relatively new to this site. We are a Brotherhood here. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

I have had one of my trucks on the cover of that magazine but are you going to flame me because it was a big lifted superduty. well guess what it was my tow rig and they also have seen my offroad rig that is completely built and has a 60 front and a 70 rear both locked with kings and a big block but thats not what they were looking for at the time. another thing is magazine editors do the write up how they want not how you want my superduty had a lot of sponsor stickers on it but they air brushed all of them out and didnt mention a lot of people and shops that had something to do with the build. /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif

[/ QUOTE ] No supprise there. They don't want to give away add space in a feature. Every car/truck mag will tell you a lot of stickers can keep you out. That is cool that shoot your truck anyway, even though I'm sure a lot of people ended up disapointed.

Intersting rant. I really didn't intend to hijack your post but it got a little more out of hand than I'd hoped. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif The truth about the first 5 is that it's a combination of them. I don't hope nor intend to build a rockcrawler type truck but I do hope to build something more multipurpose that I can use for just about everything. I do hope that it takes me FAR less than 10 years though, I'll have almost all of the raw material before it even gets warm enough outside to install it. Besides the 10 year comment which will be more like 4-5 months, the truth is a combination of all 5 entries.

I definitely see what you're saying about the "Right place right time" thing. My friend's truck was on the front cover of Peterson's last year and I hadn't even known. Appears that he was simply in the right place at the right time, too. Funny thing is that he never even told me his truck was on the front cover of the mag. I never knew, and I've got videos of me pulling him out of the mud when he buried it to the frame. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

I'm not really as new as you think to the site as I read for a long time before I joined, but /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif to you for setting me straight instead of getting bitchy like some people lately. /forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

Hey mister
No need for that attitude.
I just gave my opinion on a thread that was going on.
I guess that teaches me not to change my mind about the garage.
