shipping a car. costs?

Ahh, good call. That makes sense.

No contract yet, just quotes.

Can your guy handle my truck in it's current configuration (ie on the swampers with the soft top on)? It's about 8'2" with the top up to the tallest point, and about 7' wide as she sits.

My first NSX I purchased was in Colorado and I had it shipped to Oregon. I think I paid around $700. You will find the price varies a lot on shipping depending on if you want an open or closed carrier.

My second NSX was in Washington state so I just drove it home.

$1000 does seem high to me though if its just a state away and an open carrier. I think I would rather buy from a private party if your gonna ship a car. Dealing with car lots is like dealing with sharks. Plus you know the car lot is gonna tell you whatever you wanna hear. Once they get you there you already spent a bunch of money and are committed. I'd look at private party sales and then have the car inspected by a nuetral dealer. That is what I did. Plus you will get a better deal from a private party anyway. Car lot wants to make money on the sale, private parties wants to get rid of a car they dont need or want. They have more incentive to bargain.

Except he is buying a new car from a dealer.:D

Mine barely made it without the "oversize" charge...I believe they go by stock weight and measurements...mine had to go up top though...and it did get banged up in shipping...passenger fender got messed up...sort of looked like he tried to put it "in the cage" before deciding to put it "on the cage". if the wheels had been any wider he would have refused...it apparently barely fit as it was...he had some old big long Cadillacs on that trailer...bunch of old big long cars and my Blazer setting up top on the back...

I bet it is a lot easier to deal with a private truck owner....most of those transport companies are just broker houses anyway...a middleman that hooks you up with a driver and takes a cut.

It took 3 weeks to get a driver that was going from San Diego through Alabama...to Florida...he was Chechnyan...sounded Russian...

Yeah, I specifically asked this company about the size because it's going to Ohio and we're going to Germany so I didn't want to have to pay out of pocket to ship the wheels/tires separately on a pallet. When we moved out here from Ohio I put it on some small rollers and shipped my swampers with our household goods...

I was surprised, it really wasn't too much more with the oversize charge on there. Far less than I would spend on a pallet with about 500 pounds of swampers on it:doah:

This might be the same guy :D

I think you can put the big wheels in the bed area..if need be...no extra charge for that...I don't think...and put the small wheels on the truck...

When we sent it out I was told no loose items. No fire extinguishers, nothing that isn't hard-mounted. They also make you sweep it out and whatnot. This may be for the (ship)ping, not the truck portion:dunno: Either way, it was only like $250 more for oversized so I figured it was worth it to have it show up to my dad ready to go.

I remember very well the time that it took to get a driver and get the Blazer here...I conjured up all kinds of scenarios in my mind...it would "get stolen on the highway 5 miles from the Mexico border"....it would "fall off the truck"...."somebody would steal it while the truck driver slept"....there was a huge fire in the canyon just east of San Diego that year...I imagined it would get burned up...
I didn't even fully own it yet and I was worried crazy about shipping it...I didn't think I would ever have one so until I actually had it in my driveway I couldn't believe it...

I hear that! I was worried the ship would sink:haha:

Now we have to ship this back and we have to send my wife's new WRX half-way around the world...that's TWO oceans and a large land mass in either direction:eek1:

well, I got them down to $300 to ship it. long way from $1k.

I was still going to pass on the deal, but I've been to all of the other ford dealers around and no one will even come close to their price, even when I show them the written offer. everyone just says "I don't know how they can do that on a SHO".

guess I'm getting a good deal then. :dunno:

probably going to pull the trigger later this afternoon.

My company shipped my vehicles from AZ to KY when they relocated me last July, one car carrier had my Avalanche with my 19ft trailer hooked up to it, I had my quad and Arctic Cat side x side on it. Next one had my Blazer an van on it. I was shaking like a dog $hitting peach seeds until they all arrived.

Except he is buying a new car from a dealer.:D

In that case not much choice in the matter. I would ask them to keep the shrink wrap on the car if he is gonna ship open carrier. They warp the front end of those cars in plastic protective wrap when shipped from the factory to prevent rock chips when shipped to the dealer. I would ask that they leave that on and let the buyer remove it.

Call these folks:

http://www.magiccarpetautotransport.com/

It cost me $1000 to ship my K5 from CA to VA ... and they got it here in THREE days (instead of 7-14 like many other outfits.

I was a horrible customer to them (basically, lots going on) and they were super professional and didn't jerk me around at all.

I don't think I'd ever use another company.

everything worked out. I got them to come up enough on my trade so that I wasn't paying any extra for the shipping. then, when we did the paperwork they forgot to charge me the shipping, but still gave me the extra on my trade in. :thumb::thumb:
