Off Brand shock questions

We are going to do new shocks all around on the wifey's 2006 pontiac G6 GT, Any recommendations on brands?

Is this something I can do myself with normal tools, No vehicle lift but plenty of jacks, stands, and tools. I do have a pretty good mechanical background.

Thanks

Brand choice is like religion; some folks have very strong opinions, others are low-key, and it's veeery dangerous to ask in mixed company.

Assuming they are shocks proper and not struts, it's easy to DIY, doesn't require an alignment or anything.

The one tool you may need that I find REALLY handy is a band clamp, e.g.

wrap around the shock in place, then remove ... keeps them from expanding while you pull 'em out. Then measure it, and tighten the new one down to about the same, makes it easier to pop it in.

Those will be struts all around. I'd recommend Monroe's, you'll need the struts and while they're apart I'd replace the mounts too, that's where squeaks and rattles come from usually. Inspect the springs but they should be fine. Most parts stores have strut spring compressors you can rent/buy.

It's easy either way, jack up car, undo bolts in lower control arms that hold the bottom of the strut, undo 3 or 4 upper mount bolts (usually small, like 12 or 13mm) and remove the whole assembly. Install spring compressor, undo top strut nut, move spring to new strut, install new mount, tighten nut and release spring compressor. Repeat on all 4 corners then get it aligned.

Just be careful with those springs, there's a lot of tension on them usually, especially the fronts.
