I'm having an issue with the pulley alignment of the alternator on my 67 Elcamino.

It has what I believe to be the "correct" upper and lower alternator mounting brackets for the year. Has the short water pump. Has the 3 groove crank pulley and the outer groove aligns properly with the power steering pump. Alternator belt is on the inner crank pulley groove, which aligns with the inner water pump pulley groove, but the alternator pulley is 1/4" back from being aligned with them.

I used a straight edge to verify the measurement. Pulled the alternator and took it to Napa and verified it's the right part. Looked around online and the brackets I have cross to the right applications.

Short of custom spacing the pulley out, I don't know where to go with this.

Anyone have any ideas?

so you alt is on driver side with long upper bracket and ram horn exhaust manifold? The short water pump won't or is very difficult to use with 350 alt on passenger side.

Yes. Drivers side alternator. Swapped a 400 crate sbc in for the original 283. I believe we used the original brackets, but new components(water pump, alternator, etc.). Used stock manifolds, but they are not the ram horns.

pictures of mine with log manifold. Iirc i used and aftermarket lower bracket.

The lower bracket looks like it's the same, but my alternator is on the back side of the upper bracket, not the front.

So you know if the lower bracket is adjustable?

If it is, and I can just swap it to the front of the upper, that would be sweet.

It might be I am remembering slots in a bracket but not which bracket.

Are you using the original bracket that bolted to two exhaust manifold bolts ?...if I remember right those did have some "adjustment",and if you tried to bolt the alternator's long lower bolt into the cylinder head hole, the pulley will stick out further..

Also if your using an integral regulator alternator you may have to swap the pulley from an externally regulated unit onto it...some pulleys have different offset..chevy alternator brackets 1960's.jpg

I believe that it's all stock brackets. The upper is different than the one in the drawing. When I get to the house tonight I'll pull it apart and see exactly what I'm working with.

Alright, a day late, but that's how it goes.

Pulled the upper bracket off. Loosened the lower bracket bolts. Swapped the upper bracket to the rear side of the alternator tab and tightened it all down. Seems to be really close, if not lined up now. Will have to run it out and see if the squealing is gone.

I will post back with the results.

Finally got a chance to try the new configuration. The belt squeal I was fighting is gone or almost gone. Still a slight continuous chirp/squeak. I figure the belt surface is glazed from slipping due to the misalignment. Also noticed the power steering belt is a little loose and could be an alternate cause.

Will pick up new belts for both and see if that fixes it.

Thank you to all who helped.
