Yes.

In an '87, even more yes. It will have the upgrades counter shaft, hydraulic clutch, and the '87s I have been around with an SM465 all seem much tighter than the earlier ones.

The 87 is very nice and after thinking on it awhile, I think I want a long bed. A long bed like that 87 short bed. My search continues. Thanks to everyone for the help and replies.
