Should I sell my newer ram for an old K30?

the $$$ haven't exchanged hands yet, but we agreed on $4500. I know the lack of paint could really sour the deal, but the truck seems well equipped and well cared for, and the best deal I had found for a clean one with good paint was $6500. Andy, your brother said you were looking for a tow rig, I'll make you a deal on a big shiny dodge!:sign11:

I was hoping to find something with power to tow my brother's toy hauler.
Your offer is tempting since your dodge works so well. I like the way it is built, but I just got done paying for a car and I want so use the money toward a credit card before I pick up another vehicle and the car payments that go along with it.

I gotta say this thread has me thinking. I've been wanting a newer diesel truck for a while now. But I've already got one $400+ car payment. Maybe an older truck would make more sense. Some of the points raised here make sense in favor of an older truck.

When you figure in the payments of a newer truck vs how much it will cost you to get an older truck going or to buy a nicer one. I like the economy of the older truck. When I get done building my crew cab I will most likely have about 4500 into it, thats a new motor, 465,205 setup, everything new in the interior, its dang straight now.

I will continue to add to it in after the initial build and pretty soon I will have the truck I want

Well it's been just over 2 months since I started this thread, but I finally sealed all the deals. The dodge was sold around 10:30 this morning and the K30 :crewcab: previously pictured in this thread was mine around lunch time!:woot:

It rides like a dump truck compared to the dodge, but everything about the truck just feels like home to me down to the wiper speeds of slow and slower and having to knock the hood to get it to pop open. The tbi454 doesn't accelerate like the hemi, but it is actually better than I was expecting and still has enough nuts to burn the tires if I feel so inclined:whistle:. I seriously feel like I've been reunited with an old friend.

I do plan to spend some money to put crossover steering on this truck, but I think my other big plans should wait until I see if they are truly worthwhile for my intended use. With the money from selling the dodge, I was able to purchase the k30, pay off my medical bills, and put a chunk of change back into savings like I had hoped to. I love it when a plan comes together!:saweet:

Well I found out when I went to pick it up that it is not primer, but flat dark olive drab paint, so I won't be in as big of a hurry to paint it, a lot of my friends like the way it looks as-is and are telling me to leave it this way. I've always liked the red/black combo and this truck was originally red, so eventually I'd like to paint the whole thing red and put a fat black stripe down the sides (kind of like the factory 2 tone trucks from the 70's had.) But alas, I am a cheap bastard when it comes to cosmetics, so I wouldn't expect it to be painted in the next year.

on a different note, I attempted my first u-turn last night... an island and 3 lanes later and I still put the front and rear passenger tires all the way on the opposing sidewalk:whistle: This just reinforces the phrase "if you don't like the way I drive, stay off the sidewalk!" :haha:

Andy, I had been heavily considering a 3/4 link setup on the front, but not all floppy like my blazer, something more like what my dodge had. I'm holding off for now as the money will do me better sitting in savings than it will on the truck (I'm still not working!)

I'll try to get some pics in the next few days.

I haven't really taken pics of the truck, but here a a couple teasers:

I had the tires balanced on friday and replaced all 3 rear driveline joints and put in a new starter yesterday. I've put a couple hundred miles on it now and it seems like it is mechanically sound. I need to degrease the undercarriage and see where all the grime came from so I can hopefully fix whatever is/was leaking. The rear window is whistleing, so I may need to pull it out and put a new seal in it to make the interior nice and quiet, possibly add some dynamat panels inside the doors too. After I get caught up on maintenance, then we will see about modifying it.
