Since bumpers are the hot topic, here's the set I just did

Bump,

What Did The bumpers cost to make?

Thanks

Crap, I forgot what I paid for the tube ... I bought it like a year ago and finally got around to the project just recently.

The CUCV shackles I already had... the rest was basically scrap I had laying around.

Now if you have to figure in the cost of the welder or torch :haha:

I donno, figure on a coupla hundred bucks tops to DIY, plus the time & tools.

Well I got access to a welder, dont got a torch though

Do you think tubing is that much better than C-channel, I know its probably stronger, C-Channel is less costly to buy and should be almost as strong.

Seems like channel can get caught on things; I'm thinking particularly of the rear bumper, with the open edge facing forward, getting hooked. :dunno:

Hey man i dont know if you will reply to this or not cause the thread is so old,but i have a winch exactly like that and i have a set of custom tube bumpers. How did you do the freespool disengagement. It looks like you put a remote pull handle but where did you get the handle and cable for it? I am fishing for ideas here cause i really dont want to dice my bumper up to mount it on top of the bumper. Granted fab is fun but my bumper looks pretty good and it was just powder coated.

The pull cable came with the hidden kit; on its own the winch would have a pull handle, which you can sort of see in this picture.

The pull cable is your basic manual throttle/choke cable, as used on lawnmowers, etc. The handle end is threaded so that you turn it a half turn or so to unlock it, then pull to the desired position, and turn it again to lock it in place.

As long as you're careful about running the cable you can mount it anywhere. With a stock bumper, the pull cable came out about where it does now. In retrospect I prolly should have put a tab on the bumper to mount the pull cable to, be more solid, but this works okay.

The cable runs to the winch inside the bumper and threads into the winch proper through a hole in the frame.

Key is that the cable pulls in the same direction as the handle, in this case in line with the bumper, towards the driver's side, or else you won't get enough pull to disengage.
