Sliders for a pickup

If we can stop bitching about whether this is COG material and get back on topic, I've been watching this one pretty closely. In all my time here I've yet to see someone show how they've fabricated a set of sliders that actually work for a pickup.

Next year I want to go on my armor binge and go nuts with that but I guess I'll never have any ideas if you guys can't just talk about rock sliders instead of whether or not this should be here.

Back on topic:

Is it possible to keep the saddle tanks and pull this off, or is it a pipe dream?
 
I'd say it's possible to keep the saddle tanks, but you are then looking at a whole substructure of tubing instead of one rail along the rocker.

Whether or not you have a body lift will matter too. I know you dropped yours. I'm going to run a subframe structire that will replace the body lift but keep the height.

This is also a spiffy way to put a large tucked in bumper on your truck of you want to maximize aproach angle, just replace the frontmost body lift blocks with a 3" x 5" chunk of steel tubing. That's the way I'm going anyway. Of course the PO hacked the front of the frame off so maybe not the greatest solution.

Anyway like I said, it's doable but it's going to involve something like a halo around the tank with a plated bottom
 
I think its doable but anything you build is going to trap the tank in and pull some ground clearance away. The best solution is most likely to relocate the tank and then go from there. I've seen Mike already drag his tank with no protection (Moonlight Mine). Any bars running accross it to support a slider would have hung him up I think.

Anyone have a pic from underneath and from the side of the tank mount configuration? I can see it in my head but want a pic to draw on. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

How much room is above the tank and between the body?

This would take a little time to make, but very doable. It would be hard to get it right for a McDonalds, fit all, approach.. But the supplier could leave the frame mounting ends a bit longer and have the consumer finish it. Or get the measurement from the consumer to get the right mounting points and angle around the tank.... COuld even incorporate a mount for a tank skid plate!

Theres about zero room with no bodylift, but with bodylift the tank is lower, ughhhh....

Makes you want to dump $150 into a fuel cell eh?

Or $30 into a van tank like meeeeeeeee..... /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
 
10-4. I bought a 76 3/4 4wd a few years ago that looked like it had a burb or K5 tank mounted in the rear like a Blazer..... Cool idea but still vulnerable to scrappage and damage.
 
Ah ha but you see, my van tank is above the bottom of the frame, I am invinceable! GWAHAHAHAHA! Well except for the fact theres no rear axle in it....

Actually, the van tank is a great unknown find. It cost me 30 bucks. It's the same dimesnsions as a K5 tank (31 gallon) except the lip is lower and the slant on the bottom may be different. It's fuel injected too...

I just need to strap it down good and maybe get a new filler from that guy on pirate

Anywho, I think the best bet for a pickup slider is going to be a halo, or a big c with the open end facing the frame, surrounding the tank all the way back to the end of the tank and all the way forward to the fron cab mount, then make it so that it bolts to the frame at the C ends, and plate the bottom, simple in design, a bit complicated in excecution. It would go better with a cage to tie into, or deleted rockers.
 
Looks like you could also fashion up a plate to bolt to the slider to protect the tank also.

The problem I see with this is the bed and cab move alot /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif The cab will hit the slider when you flex it. If you weld it to the cab and bed it will tear the sheet metal.
 
Yeah, I been following this one too. I saw the article in Petersen's about their "Operation Army Truck". I wonder how the full length sliders will work out when they put some serious flex on the pickup. Pics below (not real sharp=very small/cheap digi cam) are a couple I snapped at the CalRocs event at Disney, OK this past weekend.

I've been wanting to take the bed off and bob the frame as this guy did. He does not have sliders but with an arrangement simialr to his, I wonder if you would only need them under the cab portion. His "cage" doesn't look very strong and seems to lack triangulation but I like the overall idea since I don't intend to go the "truggy" route in the near future. Maybe Russ or some of the others with more experience in this stuff could kick in!?!?!?!?

i saw that article in petersons too i want to make some just like that still trying to figure out what size tibing and best places to mate to frame...

is 1/8" square tube gonna be strong enough?
 
I don't think 1/8" would hold up. That is .125"! The article says they used .188 and I think that would be the minimum. The next thing up is probably .250 /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif I don't know the steel that well.
