In the same idea as my traction bar thread, and shock thread, who has done sliders? I would like to see everyones sliders. Pros and cons of the way you did them? How they performed.

Oh, and lots of pictures.

Ill be welding sliders on my truck here within the next week or so. There 58" trail gear sliders 1.75" DOM which i got through 4wp for $175/ free shipping. There perfect length for a k5 and for the rock terrain around here I prefer the nerf bar to keep the boulders away from the doors.

Ill post pics when i get them on and they'll be run through the ringer shortly.
 
Here are some pics of the sliders I made out of Sch. 40 pipe (otherwise referred to as "poop pipe) bent with a HF bender (or a kinker as I like to call it).







Still had some frame flex so also built tabs to go from the main tube to the body supports





And a couple shots of them currently on my rig





I know a lot of people bag on poop pipe, but for sliders, bumpers, ect that you are just bashing, I think it's the best way to go. I have hit these things really hard multiple times and not so much as even a dent. Just scrap the paint....then I spray paint them again :D

Since this thread is covering all options I'll still put this in here even if they aren't traditional sliders.

As I have saddle tanks I couldn't tie in sliders to the frame but I wanted to at least add rocker protection to keep from jamming one into the door.

I happened to have a big piece of 5/16" wall seamless tubing.

I cut slides with the plasma cutter.

And welded them to some flat bar. Here they are tacked in place. They fit tight to the current curve of the rocker. They are drilled and bolted to the flange and extend past the cab corner.

I like that I don't lose any ground clearance and I've slid off a rock onto them more than once and they are working well. It really helped on a rock that would have smashed my rusty cab corner. It just tweaked it a bit because there's nothing to bolt to there. It's hard to even see them in this pic.

Mine were originally Blazin-Offroad 2x3 tubing sliders. They mount to the body ribs. The first thing I did was build backing plates for the ribs to prevent crushing them.

I added the 2x2 .250 wall step bars to try and keep the body off the trees and rocks some (yeah that worked)

I like the step bar aspect of them, but they are actually too wide now and I find that I hang up on them more often. Tress are ok, but when you catch a rock you're stuck.

They would work great if the trails were a little more fullsize friendly. They will be getting moved up and in more like Horton's setup.

Oh and you can see in the first picture I had to add a piece of 2x2 straight into the frame because the added leverage with the step bars was wallowing out the holes in the body ribs and the sliders were getting loose.

The pictures are backwards from completion to build.











 
I'm leaning toward a simple 2x4 or maybe even 2x6 design so they actually work as sliders and don't get hung up. I don't need steps.
 
I like this thread, excellent idea and posts. Keep them coming in especially for single cab long beds :whistle:
 
I have always wanted to build sliders, I know hippies built a set for his long bed before he moved. I think he had some cool ideas.
 
I run 2 x 4 integrated on the K5.. it's definitely more work/invasive...

props to Stein, neat idea... me likey...
