sliders

cut away

I was intimidated to cut the body since I have not chopped it up yet but welding it to the body support behind the rocker is where it has to go. this will be the 1st cut. It should not matter the body is trashed. both the drivers and passengers doors are creased from laying it over on rocks :D anyways. I just want it to look clean. Im kinda picky about not being a hack. I dont want to be what I fear most about my mechanics. (A freeking HACK)

mine are round 1.75" x 0.120 wall DOM. I'll probably rig a way to use some UHMW tubing to sleeve the sliders... they will be plenty dent resistant and be tied into the frame in a ton of places. I was doing the same upgrade as you... cutting out the rockers and putting in square tube... then I just kept cutting. No she's gonna be a truggy. :thumb:

having chopped through a good deal of my body braces, I'm not sure they are "all that" structurally. I dunno... if I was going to use them somehow, I think Id try to have several bolts on each one... spread out as much as is possible.

i'm thinking baout making a slider that will weld directly onto the rocker, save you from having to cut them out....let me know what ya think.

The box tubing I am using will directly replace the rocker. I think it will look and fit better not having the rocker there. I will have it done this weekend and post up pix.

I hacked the rockers. It took about 3 hours to do it cleanly and leave a half way decent mounting surface. The body framing is sturdy and I dont think they are going to move at all. I do notice it is a lot stonger and more solid feeling in that area with them on there.

These are pictures of the prep area. I cut back to the support bracing and up to the top of the rocker just to the edge at the tread plate.

next

I tacked them up and made sure the doors opened before continuing. I could totally see making that mistake. I had to adjust the rt side down a little before starting. I Seamed the tread plates to the top of the slider. It gives it a nice finish after grinding it back down. I also did the same thing seaming the leftover center part of the rocker to the back side of the slider. just for Moral support. I was almost done and ran out of gas for the welder. so the final touches I will do next week.

No Knocking my crappy welds OK! I have not welded anything since shop class in high school 17 years ago.

i dont like making a full size wider, but I like your sliders and your approach that you took on mounting them, nice and strong.

as for the welds, sliders are fine for unsure or unpretty welds..no life or death :)

mine are welded, as well as the ones on the previous truck..works well

at last

I used a C clamp to hold the tread plate to the slider while I welded it down. and after I painted it all with Rustoleum. I primed them 1st and then black satin automotive paint. then I used white primer and whit satin over thet. did the same with the roll cage and she is still looking good.

I have not had a chance to play! I will definently have to use them soon. I wish I had a tow rig and trailer. I would be at B.B. I had to put the kicker on there for the wife. she hates getting in and out of the truck. now she is happy.
