So, I installed a new steering box, new rag joint, new rotors, new brake pads, new drag link, new calipers - got it all back together and tried a test drive. The steering is very sloppy, takes some over steer to turn left or right, then when you do you have to over-correct to get it back. Basically its like I'm steering from ditch to ditch test driving.

I have not taken it for any kind of alignment yet, too sketchy to drive it there.

What should I start looking at?

My first step would be to have someone wiggle the steering wheel back and forth while you check all the front end parts for an issue.

Reman box? Is there slop in it? I've read about bad rebuilds making their way into retail.

Yes, a reman. BBB INDUSTRIES 5030121

I hope there is nothing wrong with it, it was a nightmare to install.

I know I keep saying this, but are you ball joints and tie rod ends in good shape? How about sway bar bushings? I replaced all of these and my steering is at least tolerable now and it used to be Stevie Wonder style steering. Not OEM now, but tolerable. still have to do rag joint and leaf spring bushings.

I think I may have found something. I was turning the wheel and noticed that the steering box would move less than a 1/4 inch up/down, so it's not super super tight. I may have boogered up a couple of the holes - could that little bit of movement be the issue?IMG_1221.jpgIMG_1220.jpgIMG_1219.jpg

Agreed.... WTF is that
Looks like some type of rubber something stacked up. God, I could only imagine the amount of flex and twist those tall studs/bolts are doing. I can’t believe they haven’t sheared.

"Stops Death Wobble, Guaranteed!!!"

Seriously though, get that thing off of there. Whatever it is is doing you no good and is probably contributing to your issues.

This is awesome! So, that is the raised steering arm obviously, but the sketchy part is the "rubber/mounts" under that is what you all are saying. OK, I'm going to go take a look at that closer. Wasn't put on by me, so looks like something else I have to figure out.

Also, the small amount of play in the steering box, is that OK?

The steering box should not be moving on the frame at all. Sometimes you can see the frame itself flex and that is somewhat normal.

Looking at the angle of your steering shaft to gearbox rag joint, looks like you have a body lift?

I wonder if that is not a raised steering arm, but just a normal one with some stupid rubber spacers under it... dayum. I'm going to go find out in a little bit.

You guys have no idea how happy I will be if this is it.

That's got to feel like steering by slinky with that rubber spacer in there.
