Is it just me or is there a pretty big transition between 2nd and 3rd gear. In my blazer i never really noticed but driving my DD everyday and a tired a** motor it seems as though it's a huge jump in gearing.

:dunno:

Nah, it's a stretch. Wind it up a little. shouldn't be to bad unless the motor is really pooped...

I notice alot in my sub also i just run the gears a littel longer or deal with the little bog.Im thinking taller gears in the diffs will help going from 4.10? to 5.13

SM465:

1st 6.55
2nd 3.58
3rd 1.57
4th 1

I know most online listings say 1.57:1 for 3rd gear...but it's actually 1.70:1. We went through this a few years back, and finally MJ put it to bed by working out the various ratios by tooth count.

Still wide...but the NV4500 isn't really any better which is what made the 6 speeds so attractive. Crawler gear, overdrive, and 4 nicely spaced regular gears.

I notice it a little but at least with a decent engine it doesn't bog that bad(at least in my K5)... I'm still not sure if the engine in mine is even original, I really need to find and look up the numbers, it sure has no problem pulling hills and feels powerful to me(even more so than my Suburban), but perhaps that's the lower gears.

so, its a bigger jump from 2nd to 3rd.

is the sm465 really a 4 speed? i have a friend who is gm tech and he showed me gm's book on sm465, and in the book they call it a 3 speed w/ granny low. so taking off in ''2nd''(listed as 1st) would be fine around town?

I always take off in second. First is just too low IMO

the gear shift is labeled L,1,2,3 with the L only being intended for when the extra low gear is needed. The only time I used it when the truck was stock was when we were pulling massive quantities of feed, dirt, wood, whatever. I would get the truck rolling in L and then shift into 1.

I use low on every take off easier on the clutch, 42 and 4.10 i will take off in 2 or 1 fine just have to work the clutch harder than i like

Just spin the snot out of the motor in second before you grab third. Problem solved :D

When your tired old gasser kicks a rod out the side, swap in a diesel and then you will have so much torque that you won't notice the wide ratio :wink1:

you will note the low low highway speed though!
I already notice that. I have guys from work passin me all the time cause they say i drive like a g-pa. My comeback for this.....

Why you guys in such a hurry to GET to work :doah:

I have this tranny on my 81 1/2 ton and it is labelled L-1-2-3 but I have 2.73 axles so I usually use L for starting out. I can use 1st but I think its a little easier on the clutch to use L. Also down-shifting, I can't go down into L until I come almost to a complete stop , I assume there is no synconizer between L and 1st.

You are correct, first gear (L) is non-synchro. Sometimes you can double clutch and get it to go in like how you drive an over the road truck but by the time you have the right speed and match the rpm you are only doing 5 mph and trying to stop anyway.

I have 4:56's and it's a waste of errort and time to take off in Granny, needs the next gear almost immediately.

My third is gettin harder and harder to get into, not sure how much more time it has...

Only thing that pisses me off about my tranny is it pops out of 2nd. Only when the motor is winding down and i let off the gas though.
