I recently purchased a sm465 that had a PTO on it, but when I bought it the PTO was removed. When I got home I started fishing around in the bottom of the transmission and found a broken piece of C-clip shown in one of the pictures. Today I took the cover off and had a look inside from the top and everything looks good. I even found where the piece of C-clip is from, also shown in the pictures. My question is regarding what to do now.

- Should I fill it with oil and install it?
- Does it need to be rebuilt?

Also from what I can tell the reverse shift fork is normal and doesn't have a broken tip, but some confirmation would be nice. Hope people are having a good Friday.C-clip piece.jpgBroken C-Clip 1.jpg SM465 Reverse Shift Fork.jpg

Personally I like to go through any new to me transmissions/t cases and at minimum put new seals in. 465 rebuild kits aren’t that expensive, I’d throw one in it for piece of mind.

If you were in a stranded type of situation it might be worth the gamble and would most likely work for a limited time frame BUT trusting in it just won’t be a good idea when ya got the ability to look into it properly.
That snap ring broke for a reason and it would be best if you knew if it was because the last person in that thing abused that clip when installing it or if there is an actual issue with the unit - also why was someone inside this trans to begin with might be answered by going through it.
Could be that the trans has been used heavily and that gears side load has weakened that clip and caused a “popping out of gear” condition which is most likely the case.
Also, there is a better fix if it was caused by gear side thrust load ( see pic ) but inspect all of it for wear-n-tear while you have it apart .

Letting that snap ring ride as is would be ill advised - don’t trust it.

As for the fork - they look that way.
