SM465 Love?? Hate??

I currently have two Burbs with 465's. One 4wd with a mech clutch. Stock 350TBI, 3.73 and 33's. Runs down the road just fine and if I keep it under 60, it'll get over 15mpg. And that is GPS'ed milage, not the odo. The other Burb is a 2wd and I have a Ranger OD in front of that one. Slightly modded 350TBI, 3.73 and stock sized tires. Drives like a dream and can get almost 20mpg at 65mph, 9mpg average towing a 6k lb trailer.

As far as overworking the left leg, I float the gears in city traffic. I can float from Low all the way to 3rd and back down. Cant float with the Ranger, but that was more for towing and highway cruising. You just gotta watch traffic so you have time to shift.

I love em. Any GM truck/Burb/K5 i ever own will have one. It'll be the first mod I make if it doesnt have one already. And you guys with the NV4500, kudos to your OD, but 465's are more reliable and a helluva lot cheaper to fix, if they ever break.

If I get an older Chevy pickup for towing, I'm going with the 465 with Ranger OD or something similar, that would be much more fun and tough than any 5 or 6 speed tranny.

Dood the Ranger is the cat's meow. I dont really use mine in the city, but if traffic is slow to moderate it"ll bump 1st and 2nd up a notch and maybe save shifting. But towing is where the Ranger kicks a$$. I never had to worry about over running or lugging the engine. Yeah it's a lot of shifting to get up to highway speeds, but it takes alot of strain off the engine and helps to stay in the power band. Would probably work great on the old diesels where rpm's are limited.

And for those who think shifting the Ranger is a hassle, check this out. I have an air shift setup that uses a center off momentary paddle switch on the main trans shifter stick. Of course I never permanently installed it due to floor board clearance issues, but the trial runs worked awesome.

I always wanted to some how install a ranger shifter like a 2 speed on a big truck. Push pull switch mounted on the shifter.

I tried to find the air switch like my old boom truck at work had. Probably out there somewhere but I didnt have a part number or a manufacturer. And the one I did find on eBay might have worked, but it would have been pretty bulky.

Wouldn't you be able to use an Eaton Shift knob out of a big rig attached to the top of your 465 shift lever? Just run the air hoses down through the floor board. Maybe I'm missing what you are talking about. IDK ?

Maybe an older one. All the new ones I've driven were 'lectric over air. Which is basically what I'm doing. I wanted the old style air switch to cutout the need for soleniods and additional plumbing. If an electric linear actuator was fast enough, I'd install that and be done with it.

all are trucks are juice brakes so they don't have any air. I think thats the deciding factor.

I think you guys have a 2spd rear which is electrically controlled. What I'm talking about is a shifter for a 8/10spd trans.

I have a thread somewhere around here about my project. Better move our conversation over there before we get in trouble for derailing the thread:D

Edit: Found my thread but it appears I kinda left it hangin'. I have everything and did some tests on the components. Once the weather gets better and the Burb is moving again, I'll tackle this lil project and actually get somehwere with it.
