Just bought an SM465 with hydro bell housing, NP208 & pedal assembly. When I pulled the t-case a lot of gear oil was in the adapter. Is this normal? I can't see any evidence of a rear seal. Is there suppose to be one? All I see is a bearing locknut.

Normal. Rear of trans is open to the adapter. Glue her up tight to keep the water out.

Sounds good. Should I change the front seal before I install it? I don't see any evidence of leaking, but it seams like it would be a good idea.

From someone who had a sm465 rebuilt and it dribbled a few drops a day out of front seal I would do it. And I would put a repair sleeve on it if it even looks slightly worn.

Well, it turns out that it needs a little more than just a front seal. It sounded a little "gritty" when I spun the input shaft so I pulled the top to have a look and found lots of sand inside. Also drained about 20oz of water out of it. The bearings and gears look great though. So I think the water and sand got in there from the PO letting in sit outside with nothing covering the vent hole. I have to tear it down to make sure I get the sand out and inspect everything at the very least.

Any ideas on pulling the counter and main shaft bearings w/o buying that special tool?
