how much can it cost to get a sm465 fully rebuilt. whats the best way to tackle this project. my transmission is loud as all hell and the syncros r hooped.

Cheaper to find another in better shape...there are only about 6.3 million of them still around.

To have it rebuilt, $1200 or more wouldn't surprise me. To rebuild it yourself, probably $500 or so for parts plus whatever special tools you'll need to do the work.

I rebuilt mine for 300 bucks, and used a torch, hammer, block of wood, two flat blade screwdrivers and a pair of snap ring pliers to do so :haha:

Here is a rebuild manual for the SM465 to see how GM would recommend rebuilding it:

i'm jealous. i spent 200 hundred on a rebuild kit, borrowed bearing pullers that barely worked unless my buddy was there to help me, put it all together, thought everything went smoothly, got it in the truck, drove half mile, truck started to buck like a m*****fu**** then was only able to limp home riding the clutch in lo gear. ripped the thing out went to the junkyard picked up a new one for $200 and its been in the truck ever since while the busted one has been in the garage. one of these days i'll tear it apart and figure out what the heck happened. then the kicker is that i later found out it wasn't the trans that needed to be rebuilt it was a noise coming from the rear. it sounded like a bearing was shot right under the front seat so i thought it was the trans. it was a pricey waste of time and money

As mentioned, those transmissions don't wear out often and you may be better off finding a good used one. They generally don't bring too much money.

Otherwise they are fairly simple and inexpensive to rebuild.

Last I checked with Shift Management Inc, they said they would rebuild mine as needed for $300 plus whatever parts are needed on MY transmission.
I will be doing that once I am ready and have the cash.
I have had great success with their work on autos and I trust the manual would be just as good.
I used to do all my rebuilding but now a days I make more money working than I would save by doing it myself so I farm out the work.:dunno:
