My sm465 keeps dropping out of 3rd (2nd) gear and I need a new throwout bearing anyway. I found a friend with a 10spline sm465 out of an older truck. Mine is out of my 87 obviously its not the course spline and it is a hydro clutch.

Besides changing the output shaft to a 32spline will I need to do anything else besides use my bellhousing for the hydro clutch?

Also I plan on tearing it down and doing a full rebuild. This will be my first time and I'll be taking it very slow. What sort of special tools am I going to need?

Big snap ring pliers, and there is a puller for the front bearing, other than that not many special tools needed. Anaheim(sp?) gear makes a spacer to eliminate the jumping out of gear problem.... Might be worth giving them a call.

it's been a while since I did mine, and the site that I did the write-up on is broken, but if I remember right just swapping tail shafts isn't that easy. There's a bushing on the shaft that is a pain. I had to bring mine in to the tranny shop and have them remove it for me. With the right tools it's easy enough though.

I had to modify a gear puller to have long enough arms for me. I also used a huge screw driver, channel locks, snap ring pliers, and a piece of receiver tubing.

Rebuilding it is very easy, it just takes a little bit of patience. Something I did was take pictures throughout tear down. That way I had a reference when putting it back together. Saved my butt.

the output shaft on the tranmission is also the same shaft that all the gears are on and the reason for your gear jump out as well. You will not be able to just swap a shaft and fix that problem. So in other words you don't need that 10 spline SM465.

It might actually be cheaper to get a used sm465 from a 87 with the correct input and output splines. These transmissions are not in demand since the nv 3500 came out.
On a second note, if the output shafts are the same why can't you use a clutch disc that has 10 splines. Compare your disc to a new 10 spline. There may not be any differance except the splines. Also measure the imput shaft length and diameter where the throwout bearing rides.

The clutch end is referred to as the input side, and all the Chevy manual tranny's had a 1 1/8" 10 spline input.

The spline count he is referring to is at the other end. Older SM465's had a coarse 10 spline output which was prone to wear and came with a so-so coupler to the T-case. His '87 version is the much stronger 32 spline output (and no coupler to the T-case)

To the original poster, I'd just rebuild the 32 spline unit you currently have. You don't need that other tranny.

I cant knock my daily driver out of commission

The 465 that you have should already have the upgraded sleeve in it, instead of the C clips on the countershaft that the older models had, they would break and cause 3rd gear to move around and to jump out. odds are its the 3rd gear and teeth on the ring thats worn, there is an aftermarket assembly thats available, it has a different cut on the teeth, so it holds together under load. I got it and a new mainshaft from www.tbtrans.com they had the best price I could find at the time. As for tools to do it, you will need a large bearing seperator to pull the rear bearing, since nothing else can be removed until it is out, and access to a press. I think a small 2 jaw puller will be needed to pull out one of the countershaft bearings, but I never went that far into mine.

I have a pdf file of the sm465 if you want a copy pm me your e mail addy I will send it to you.

Anyone have a good source for a remanned trans?

Sent your way.I also looked in to the reman trans the price range is around 900.00 to 1200 dollars not including shipping or core charge.Hicks 4x4 has rebuilds for 795.00+ core and shipping.Look here.

It was about 7 years ago I did mine the price probably has changed.

When I followed your link to Hicks this is what I got -

I got a price quote from work for like $750 after my discount and core. Doesnt seem that bad for no shipping charges at all.

I bought a used SM465 and NP208 for $350 and a rebuild kit for ~$100. What i plan on doing is swapping the used tranny into my truck, rebuild my origional one, then put it back in, then sell the used one. Not too much work(SM465 is not hard to pull), and it is kinda like the loan a tool program... How hard is it for you to find a used tranny up there?

???? I go right to hicks 4x4 anyone else have a problem with the link?????

Link works for me ?????????????
If ya can't find one local , I have a couple SM465's with the 32 spline output, both out of trucks with no issues.
P.M. me if ya can't find one.

Yeah I'm not sure I want to go tackling rebuilding it myself on my daily driver. It will be $750 flat no shipping or anything.

I rebuilt mine for $300 bucks using nothing more than a ford wrench snap ring pliers, BFH + couple brass drifts & blocks of wood, and a few sizes of two and three jaw pullers.

Quick and easy to do, took me about three hours start to finish the first time I did one :)
