just started rebuilding a 2wd version sm465 with the 10 spline input shaft at school today. when we pulled the pto cover a bunch of nasty dirty rusty water poured out of the thing. before we started the tear down we could not get the thing to shift at all. the insides are rusted and cruded up pretty bad but it is salvagable. i havnt had really any problems cept the top cover what the shifter is mounted to WILL NOT come off. i beleive its one of the shift forks ceased up and the reason it wont come off but i dont know. does the shifter need to be taken off? i mean the whole top cover will come off about 1/2 inch but after that wont budge. have pryed on it and used the BFH. am i missing something? how does it come off? thanks.

Actually, you need to put the shifter half way between neutral and reverse, then lift. The reverse shift fork is binding against one of the gears in the case.

If any of the teeth of the gears have rust of em, you can pretty much count it as a loss...

i am not lettin a little bit of rust stopping me. how is the shifter removed? pull that pin out? or what else?

No need to remove it man! Infact, the shifter makes a great handle to lift off of.

I can promise you won't get it off unless you stick it half way between reverse and neutral -- I've rebuilt 2 of these transmissions now ;)

All you need is a pair of snap ring pliers, a bearing puller tool, big hammer, brass drift (or a press, if you have one), and a torch to heat up the sintered iron bushings for the mainshaft.

And when you get to the point of wanting to remove the shifter there is no need to remove any pins either. The domed sheetmetal cover holding the shifter on just needs to be pushed down and twisted to release the shifter.

Halfway into reverse is the magic spot it needs to be in to remove the top cover.

the thing is so damn seized up becuase of the rust that it is impossible to move the shifter. good news is my teacher gave me the trans because the school does not actually own it, as it was his buddies who passed away. what i plan on doin with the trans is just messin with it every now and then and eventually completely rebuild it. who know what ill do with it, i just want to rebuild it so i know how and can say ive done it. thanks for all the help though

So how much rust on the teeth would be too much? I just started cleaning mine up to put in the Blazer when I get it back together and realized that I had left it outside with the shifter lever out and some of the gears have a little surface rust on them. Everything still turns very free and nothing even seems like it is begining to seize up or anything and there is no pitting that I have seen, just a little surface rust on a few of the gears.
