ok, so i'm still trying to figure out why i'm getting super-smokey starts. the smoke is definitely fuel related and clears up real nice and runs GREAT when the engine is warm. I fire it up, and get on the fuel w/ it in gear and it'll clear up after a very short time of driving. However, my smoke cloud is HUGE.

  • I know i've got one GP out, but i also know that this won't be a fix-all, because even when i've had 8 fully functioning GP's I still get the smokey starts.
  • I have the gear reduction starter.
  • I replaced my injectors this month. This helped, but wasn't a fix-all.
  • My batteries are old and I think only at 60% capacity - but they were 2 batteries at 1000 CCA each, and always have had problems with smoke on start up. I know good batteries are key, but it seems they aren't completely the issue because of the fact that I had this problem even when the batteries were good.
  • How do I know if the timing chain needs replaced ($20 per ebay) or if the pump needs replaced (minimum $200 ebay). both of these components have an unknown number of miles on them.
I don't have the money to replace stuff right now - but I'd like to get the problem diagnosed so that when I do have the $$$ I can get it taken care of. It's embarrasing to start my rig if the engine is cold...

:1zhelp:

You could try bumping the injection timing just a touch...but it really sounds like a worn IP to me. My Jimmy got like that shortly after I put the 6.2 in it. Smoked like a train when cold. Rebuilt IP and injectors and that problem went away. My '83 smokes somewhat when cold, for the first 10 seconds...but I have at least 2 dead GP's (again...don't buy quick heats, they don't last)

yeah, i learned about the quick heats too! i run the ac60g's now. well, i'm dissappointed to hear that it's probably my injection pump. when you have a healthy fuel delivery and ignition system, how much smoke should be seen on start up? i'd like to be able to start this sucker in my garage...

when you refer to bumping the injection timing - are you referring to loosening the bolts on the injection pump and rotating it? right now, mine is about as far forward as you can go. what are your thoughts about that?

if you have your IP clocked one way or the other all the way...that is bad and could be your problem...mine was smokey as well during start up..can't remember which way I turned it...when I did it fixed my problem completely...but a little goes a long way...try setting it in the middle and gve it a shot...or at least a little better starting place ...good luck.

look for a base timing scribe mark. I can only speculate that the 6.2 IP does something similar to the bosch VE pumped cummins. set it back to stock timing. then monkey from there........

see the scribe mark near the closest nut......it is on the pump flange and the gear case.

yeah, i know where the center line is. i'll put it back to that scribed line for the cold start.

if it still smokes alot on that first start up, should i advance or retard it?
should i shut it down, readjust, and then just fire it back up to try again - or should i leave some time between starts to make sure it's actually a true cold start?

Don't move it more than 1/16" past the scribe lines being lined up.

Don't move it more than 1/16" past the scribe lines being lined up.

Last time I brought a 6.2L in and had the timing set it only cost around $35... Far better to spend a few bucks and get it right than to just guess. Those scribe lines are never exactly right, especially if the IP has ever been changed.

alright, i'll give it a shot and if i can't get it timed right i'll take her in. :( never had anyone work on my truck before...

You've never had a tire patched? :haha: Seriously though, you don't even want to know what a diesel timing light costs!

i am a college student, but you've piqued my curiosity.

as a side note, i'm headed out to the garage right now to take the measurement you and i talked about...

haven't worked on it yet. it's finals week. if i finish studying early tomorrow i'll give it a shot. may not be till friday till i mess with the truck. my dd is a bicycle - so i'm in no rush! :D

to your other question you want to advance the timing not retard it. from the baseline.

I checked the timing on the '95 6bt thats in the dually conversion project. while it was on the floor. it was set at 27* BTDC. reeeefriiikin rediculous. PO said he had hard starting issue :doah: no kidding. btw stock is 13*.........

gotchya. makes sense that i would not want to retard it, but i wouldn't want to advance it too early because it might be sending fuel in partially during an exhaust stroke?

Too advanced and it'll be injecting fuel too early in the compression stroke. Too advanced and your 6.2 will sound a lot more like a cummins.

Suck, squeeze, bang, blow.
