Snoozin' 350 into Building the Rockbeast

Thanks Dyeager. I've been scrounging info on this motor from the start. Wasn't sure what max lift was for the heads but was trying to stay under .470 but now I can revise that lift range. My hopes are to put in a nice torquey cam for low/midrange, headers and lose the Holley 600 for a well tuned Quadrajet.

OK the Summit 1102 has .421/.444 lift with factory rockers. 1101 comes in less than that.

To be safe with if you choose Vortecs keep you lift no more than 450 to be safe unless they are modified.
No need for more lift than that anyways.

LOL 82 I've got 3 adult kids and 2 grandsons....my allowance isn't much LOL. But seriously until I start needing to dial in the total timing, etc I'm good with where it's at right now.
Blazer I decided not to go with Vortecs at this time,if at all, and just 'bumping' what I've got with what I can afford.
Well I looked at those headers, they're still on the 84.....looks like they dump out right where my front shaft sits.....ah well......

sigh....now my buddy just has to muddy the waters with " I can get you a vortec cam and lifters CHEAP " out of a stock vortec 5.7 ...no heads,no intake just the cam and lifters....swears just that is worth it without the heads, headers,etc.....I swear I'm gonna hit him with a brick if he doesn't quit changing my mind :angry1:
At least we DID get 4 doors on the 'burban that all shut nice and windows work today.

I don't think you can use the lifters on that block, they don't have the bosses for the spider in the valley. you'd have to run linked lifters.

Josh this oddball crate does have the provision for the spider and rollers. The guy I bought this motor off of won't tell me whats what after his old lady flipped about him selling it for 300 bucks :dunno: All I know is he had it in a GMC school bus with a big 2Jet Rochester on it. When we pulled the intake we saw the bosses, etc. THATs where the whole " complete Vortec top end" discussion kicked off and got me antsy about more power/torque :D Then ,as usual, the story changed on what's available for how much etc etc etc.
So....this guy bought a roller ready block and had 261 truck heads, flat tappet cam and 2 barrel intake put on it. Heads are allegedly the low GM compression, 8.1 or so?, yet when I run 87 octane it sounds like a maracca.
Every time I get close to a decision on cam etc one of my buddies has OTHER, BETTER, CHEAPER,EASIER plans instead......driving me a little bugf*ck......

Strange, I've got a goodwrench350, and it did not come w/ the provisions, but did come w/ fantabulous dished pistons and giant chamber heads....

This thing has had me baffled since I got it....but it IS a nice strong running crate. I forgot to mention it has the mechanical fuel pump too. Not sure about the pistons and only the numbers to go on with the heads which says it's 76cc with 1.94 and 1.5 valves.....that makes me wonder WHY the 87 octane doesn't make the motor happy.

Block cast is 14101148. Heads are 14079261 or 267? Which I can't find ANYthing on 267s so thought it had to be 1 not 7

PS More wierdness.....on back of block....left of crank has 627 cast in it , right of crank has 638...

The heads that came on my g350 are 462624 they are awful. Started pulling rocker studs (press in) so I replaced them... I don't have the block number on mine, but it looks like they either changed out parts over the years or that's not originally a g350. This one was purchased by my uncle and given to me so I know it for sure was.

Whatever this one is it was ordered this way, this guy doesn't do motor work on his own, just drops 'em in. While we were pulling it I heard his wife in the house throwing around numbers and threats  .....heard something about 2300 dollars and extras....heard I wasn't getting any of the paperwork on it....no idea what she meant but it sure is alot of contradicting numbers and behavior ....when my friend was moving the bus to pull the motor he was spinning tires on hardpack ...bus had a big automatic trans. I'd love to know the exact compression and specs. And why he got a 4 bolt TBI roller ready block then had flat tappet cam, mechanical pump and 2 bbl intake put on it.
For all I know it could be the 600 Holley holding it back. It runs smooth and strong just not quite enough punch for me.

600 cfm carb should be fine for a 350 that's not revving real high - 5500+ Most people over carb them. Smaller carb will tend to get you better throttle response. If you have a roller block you'd probably see better power going to a roller cam - and if you already have provisions it's cheaper. But if you're going to leave the heads focus on lower end power so don't get too wild.

Those heads are 80's smogger heads and not doing you any favors but if you're not revving them out they may be ok for now. If you're interested in some aftermarket heads the world products sr torquers are relatively cheap and well built. you can get them in 72 or 64cc. summit has their own house rebadge of them that I bought, they seem ok.. Still too big in the chamber though for real power w/o doing domed pistons, but they can be ported out down the road. I bought a set to replace the craptastic ones that came on mine. If you stick w/ old skool 350 items you don't have to swap over all the other parts that vortec's entail... I seriously considered going vortec if I didn't get nickel and dimed on the other stuff. And keeping egr on vortecs is a pain. But you can make some good power on them.

I'm leaning hard towards just some minor upgrades to the 350 and when I've got money to spend just buying the 454 my instigating bud keeps teasing me about. He keeps changing the price but it stays around 5oo and under which is pretty good for a big block that runs fine. As I said the motor pulls my heavy 'burban pretty well as is for a stock 350. I just tend to always want more power LOL. Long term plan is IF I get the 454 I can drop the 350/700r into a lighter truck for my brother to use as a 2nd work beast.

...back from gearhead limbo :saweet:......
Been a while since I posted but during the roaring silence I snagged those Vortecs off my buddy...062s and an RPM Air Gap intake [happy happy joy joy] for a DAMN good price. Also in the meantime he had a Holley 600 that's been rejetted and brought my sleepy 350 to LIFE. The mix still smells a tad lean and I plan on losing the secondary metering plate for a block and jet upgrade when I put the Vortecs and intake on.

Sadly my friend caught himself a VOP and left before getting the rest of the roller setup for me so I'm still looking at a flat tappet cam to go with the low lift numbers on the 062s. I just want some good low end torque and decent midrange, the OD with the 3.73s lets me cruise on I95 with a little pep left for manuevering around idiots :screwy: I don't drag race or rock climb and the only real offroad I do is customer driveways and pre-paved developments.

On the cosmetic side....I'll be ordering some quarter corners, wheel archs and rockers to lose the cancered up and loose wheel damaged areas.
LMCs body mount kit will make life alot smoother getting the body off the frame again. Then it's Raptor time.....liner that is....I've been posessed with this idea to go from a super glossy blinding white roof/hood decks down into gray Raptor to black pans and wheel flares.
I could keep rambling on my hopes and plans but......I'll be sure to get pics now that I've got a phone worth a damn....

here ya go

roller kit

Looking for a LT1 or LT4 cam.

Cam specs
Cam----INT / EXT
Stock LT1---202@ .450/ 207 @ .450 (1.5RR)--- 117 LSA
Stock LT4--- 203@ .476/ 210@ .480 (1.6RR)--- 115 LSA

Both of these will make you grin...^^

FWIW, I have one of these in my garage. 12530282

Hey thanks Ray but that's still a little out of my allowance range. I know it's a shame to pass on the roller setup but until I make the big bucks....
Nice motor ya got there ;) Not sure how much you read of my motor but I'm told the owner ordered it from his dealership,it had under 10K ( looking inside during the swap I can believe it) and we pulled it out of a GMC school bus lol.
I'm thinking with the Vortecs and even a small tweak on the cam I'll be really happy with it, this thing pulls my 'burban great but I couldn't pass on the heads and intake for the price!
I'm driving myself nuts looking for good duration with safe lift and a range that doesn't wait too long or flatten too soon....I know,it's asking alot lol.....

Then again I'm seeing some do-able prices on roller cams on Ebay so thanks again Ray you got me thinking hard on rollers again

Well before you change the cam run it with the Vortecs. I think you'll be surprised. Then I would then do headers, then cam. Doing a cam swap without exhaust mods will stifle the cam because the engine would be "choked" by a restrictive exhaust system.

Just thinking out loud...that Comp 12-231-2 cam looks good IMO. You'd be surprised how easy it is to "over cam" an engine.

I say go with the comp cams cam. i have the hydraulic roller one
http://www.compcams.com/Company/CC/cam-specs/Details.aspx?csid=197&sb=2

looks like specs are close.

also that cam is what $120? I would go new... why bother buy used when that isnt expensive. Mine was $300 new...

also I am running stock 1996 vortec heads. just slapped them on. No modifications and I went with that cam as I read somewhere .475 valve lift max so I went .458
