Snow Clearing

That's exactly like the "Coal Scoop" I was describing...thanks ,now I dont have to look for a photo of one!...
I "grease" mine well with paste Butchers Wax before using it,it makes the snow slip off nicely with no sticking...Pam cooking spray works good too...

I find a long handled square "dirt" shovel to be best for clearing steps off, especially in deep wet snow..they are heavy, but the long handle makes the steps easier to reach...

I've heard that PAM works, need to try that. Hopefully I don't attract the Bears with it...lol

I like that 'coal' shovel the best. Though hard tough plastic, with higher side walls. Once you start getting tired, the wider headed shovels gives you the possibility of tilting to one side or another, and dumping your load on accident.

For actual snow I prefer thick hard plastic. But ice and small amounts of slushy or hard packed snow, a metal tip is great. Though it seems the metal tips always finds that funky crack or bump or something and stops the shovel dead in its tracks, where plastic seems to glide over it. Probably just not a fine enough edge to 'catch' on things.

I like the two stage self propelled snow blower. I got a Cub Cadet this year, 28" wide, 20" high, 357 cc electric start. You probably won't find hp ratings on any you're shopping for anymore, due to some lawsuit over inflated numbers. Best estimate I found on ours was 13 hp. I've run it through 2 1/2 foot drifts and it hardly labors at all. When the plow came by and filled our on street parking areas with 2 feet of chunky windrow it ate that up easily too. We can get by with a shovel here, but to do all the walks and the driveway is about 1 1/2 hours. Takes me 15 minutes with the snow blower.

It'll throw snow 50 feet easily...my biggest concern is putting something through our front window from the street.

Lawn tractor with a blower on the front. Nuff Said.

pop a couple bolts off in the spring and put the mower deck on. Reverse in the fall and put the blower on.

Few passes when it snows and you are good.

Whoever recommended the big plastic snow plow shovel, thank you. It dominates. And after 2.5 hrs, it snowed another 2 inches.

Buying a snow blower this summer for sure

seems like a decent deal and being that it's a 20 day old ad you can probably offer him $400. I'd ask how old it is.

To you guys recommending snow shovels...

Seriously, have you ever seen or used a Yooper Scooper like the Silver Bear one I linked to? It's like 5x faster than shoveling and about 1/4 the work. Those hand shovels are just for the small stuff, like the front steps or a short sidewalk. For a driveway, if any of you had one of these things sitting, you would never reach for the shovel again. It can literally be faster than snow blowing in some conditions.

All the tracked blowers around here see to be in the $1000+ range.

Would this be a good purchase?

I'll let my old beat-up Honda go for the $100 I paid for it. It's tracked, but is a 3-speed instead of the modern hydrostatic units. I brought my hydrostatic one down from AK last year, so I don't really need a second machine.

I was told it came from Northstar. It's very beat up, but it runs fine and it is a Honda. It's an HS80.

Silicone Spray works good too,but has to be apllied often, and only when the shovel or other impliment is dry..I have used drain oil on my snowblower's chute and auger housing, but I'm sure the EPA wouldn't approve...but those two things wont attract bears!..

I can tell you hundreds of cool stories about those tires.

Hopefully!

Going to do a bit of basic maintenance, set it up for storage, and keep praying to the snow gods!

Anyone found a good source for the actual repair manuals online? I don't need one yet, but don't want to buy a $40 repair manual.

Going to do a bit of basic maintenance, fuel filter, plug, fuel hoses, oil change, hopefully carb gasket will stop the fuel drip. Besides that, i'll drain and winterize, and be ready for the next snow!

Make sure you have some extra shear pins if that blower uses them. Sucks breaking a pin in the middle of clearing snow and not having a replacement.

I have 4 lift tickets that I never used, terrible year! I'll be praying to the snow gods and doing a snow dance this fall.
