of the tcase, its like old brittle rubber that is superglued to the metal, its just coming apart and i dont have much hope if getting it out, needlenose plyers and screwdrivers dont work. Any tricks here? If not how can i juryrig the truck to limp it a mile to my mechanics so he can finish my mess. Man i feel defeated  haha any tricks to 20 year old seals guys?

If its like a np205 front output seal the metal part surrounding the rubber is part of the seal and comes out too. I just put a piece of tube in there and whacked it with a hammer. Not sure how a np208 seal is set up though...

I thought the front output on a 208 has the seal with the external flange. IIRC. Should be able to pry it out from the outside. If not, a body puller with a screw drive bent 90 at end and welded to the puller. I have one in the bottom drawer of the tool box.

haha i have no idea what any of that is. It really looks like its all ruber from the center of the seal to the edges, and the new one i got from autozone is metal around the edges with rubber only in the middle. I thought my old one was metal aorund the edges but either its so old and sealed in i cant tell or the old one is all rubber. I cut the seal and tried grabbing the cut part and tried pulling it like out and around and it just broke like old cracked rubber does, tried getting a razorblade in there and tried cutting it out but after i got the top more exposed part of the seal out, i still have the base of the seal stuck "glued" to the metal and i have no idea how to get that crap out

thanks, but i mean the things old rubber and is coming apart so what do i do then? ill pick one of those up tommorow. And the rubber is like supergluded to the metal so how do i scrape that crap out without damaging the case. I mean not to sound like a bitch, i can get the seal out, i just know im gonna gouge the surface if i go gung ho..

why are you just scraping the rubber out?

look at the new seal, the old one should be the same, rubber surrounded by a metal ring... you probably just can't see the metal ring...

take a large flatblade screwdriver, stick it in sideways, behind the seal, and pry it out...

tried doing it, no go. Yeah it looks like rubber to the edge but maybe your right and im not seeing the metal, ill try the puller tommorow, only got one more day to do this, meh

That is the tension spring for the seal, it's part of the seal so don't worry about it. Some seals are a steel casing that is fully encased in rubber and i'll bet that is what you currently have in there. Like everyone else said, just get beinhd the seal with either the proper seal puller or a large screw driver and pry it out.

yeah, it's part of the seal... you should prolly see a new one on the back of the new seal...

take a can of brake cleaner and clean the old seal area.. then take a pick and scrape around the outer metal around the seal till it cleans out the groove between the seal and housing.. once you find that groove, take a cold chisel and drive/collaspe the old seal metal ring inward. then just put a flatblade between the 2 and pop it out...

alright guys thanks for the help, ill try tommorw and update this thread when i get stuck again haha, i tried hammering in the screwdriver to collapse the ring but im worried ill damage the tcase surface, i think the easiest way is to get the puller then ill try from there

Just to let you know, when I attempted the seal puller, I still ended up using a screwdriver to go in between the case and seal. They don't like to let go after a few years.

Basically just followed Ryoken's advice on cleaning the surface until I could see the edge of the seal. Using my large screwdriver, I just pounded it in at an angle and opened the edge of the seal up enough that I was finally able to pry it out.

Just as ryoken stated.........

But, as I stated in your last thread (asking "how-to") - Be very careful where you pry. As you stated, you do not want to gouge the transfer inner lip - Where the seal seats.......and forms a pressure seal on the outer perimeter.

As far as the seal puller tool goes - I also in the past have had no luck with them and old seals. Being that old seals are rather stubborn, the puller tends to rip right through the rubber of the seal. Technically, the puller tip should be pulling on the band of the seal, which would possibly lead to gouging the inner housing lip.

Go with a hardy flat tip screwdriver. Lay it across the spline drive shaft - Straight across. Where the tip of the screwdriver finds the seal, tilt the screwdriver in, towards the back of the seal. Slide the screwdriver into the housing and try to "bite" the back of the seal's band.

Normally, you would then back off a millimeter or so to assure you dont bite the housing. But from what I am reading, you havent much seal left to work with. I am under the impression that you have remnants of the rubber seal itself and the entire band remaining. The inside inner edge of the rubber - Where it meets the band - Is your target bite area.

Regardless - Try to break the pressured seat that the band is holding on the transfer. Once you do, the band and whatever remains of the rubber seal, will simply fall out.

Hope this helps. And as before - Good luck !

(Also)...... You might consider keeping this topic in one thread so that suggestions and ideas are not repeated and those which are trying to help you have the entire picture of what has already transpired - Instead of tripping into one of your previous two threads and replying to it without knowing your way past thread 1 and 2 and on to #3. Plus, it clutters the BB. Thanks !

Yeah sorry, went kinda crazy over the last few days with the posting! I ended up getting the seal out, i got that big double headed hooked seal puller by craftsmen. At first it looked to be too big for the job but within a minute i got it hooked in the exact spot you described and pretty much rested the other head of the hook agiast the case and just used some leverage and out she came. You can see the dent in the back of the seal where i hooked it. But, everythings back in and no leaks! just took my twelve hours, 9-10 of those dissasembly with headaches. Was pretty easy putting it all back together. Except for putting the crossmember back up, but i had my gfs help for that haha

Congrats - As I told you in thread #1 - It's really a simple task.

You were probably starting to think I was joking, but now that you have done it yourself - Im sure you agree.

Glad you got it done :waytogo:

ITs funny, if i had to do it again it would go quick, but between learning as i go, all the stuck bolts and running around to buy stuff i need it went slow. It was easy, but it wasnt haha. Thanks
