So Brad (white-rhyno) comes over tonight and we decided to play around w/ my steering box for a bit. We got that baby tapped, but now how the hell do all these pieces go back together???? Hmmmmm, all these little ball bearings fell out and we had to beat on the end piece w/ a hammer and a chisel w/ for a while, but we finally got that bitch apart! I actually don't figure this will ever go back together and I will have to find another box to start over, but hey... at least I know how one comes apart now!

Oh, but I figure w/ all the money I saved on my $400 tow rig over a newer Dodge I can afford to buy a few steering boxes!!!!!

The Pabst is a nice touch....and if you bought that newer dodge you wouldn't have to be messing with it in the first place.... :D ;)

yeah cause he wouldn't have had the money for a tap :D

Did you really find it neccessary to completely disassemble the box? I mean couldn't you have just carefully drilled it and used a magnet to keep as much of the shavings out as possible? As for how it goes back together **insert the old smiley of shrugging guy here**

That link is helpful, but does not help with putting the balls back in correctly.

True, but if he had read the link when I posted it in his last thread his balls wouldn't be all over the place right now. I posted this exact link in his last post asking where to drill and tap the holes for hydro assist...apparently he never checked it out.

Actually I did read the link the last time, but only for the placement of the holes. I got it drilled, etc.. w/ o any problems but the issues was getting the tap to go in far enough to get enough threads on the fittings to make me feel comfortable. So, i called a buddy who said that you have to pull that shaft out... so we did... turns out we were only supposed to pull it out A LITTLE BIT and not all the way out so the bb's fall everywhere. Oh well, live and learn... steering boxes are cheap and now I know how they work in there!!

The one hole is no big deal once the orbital valve is removed, the other hole doesn't require anything to be removed, but does require the tap to be shortened so it'll give the correct thread depth without bottoming out.

I spent the most time trying to support and clamp the box on the drill press...
