This thing would be pretty nice embedded in the dash of the k5. It's got gps, music, movies. I'm thinking about creating a custom fiberglass pod. My current dash pad is all cracked. I've never worked with fiberglass before. What would be involved in doing a job like this?

In a nutshell, MDF, fleece, and fiberglass. I would recommend checking out the forums at www.mp3car.com they have build threads for custom dash/stereo work just like the truck builds on CK5.

Thats a damn good idea. Plus it would be a way more compact version I what I ran in my truck (mini itx computer with a 6in interfaced touch screen).

There is also this nice trails gps app. I might have to buy another one just for the truck.

Hmmm your making me think I need one now. How much is the app? Laptop apps with geographical maps are upwards of $300 with all the maps to make use of them.

There are several apps. The one I downloaded was free but has a $3.99 full version price. There are other apps all under ten bucks. You can also just use the maps app it comes with.

The app I have now is called "Trails". You would need to get the 3G iPad with the data plan. The data plan is a no contract $14.99/month fee that you can cancel at anytime. Only problem is that if you are in real remote locations I'm not sure how much of the maps are cached.

Just got an iPad about a week ago so....... Subscribed. :deal:

I can't remember, does it have a headphone jack? If so, what I was going to do for my 63 Impala so all I have was a single cable connection and no head-unit. Buy a 3.5mm jack out to audio L-R RCA cables. Plug them straight into a 4-channel amplifier that would disperse out to all the speakers.

That way you could eliminate your head-unit altogether, and have your entire music library with you constantly. You just got to figure out the charging issue so it would remain charged while in the vehicle, other than a cigarette lighter adaptor.

Yes, it has a headphone jack. I wouldn't want to give up an AM/FM radio. I would get a headunit with a 3.5mm auxillary input.

the forum i'm on for my 300C a guy is doing this into his dash there.
for same reasons (other then trail maps obviously)

i'll see if i can find the post agian. maybe givey ou some idears?

All true.. BUT... it is nice to have the backup system running should you be out of cell coverage.
yeah but if you have music loaded to your itunes on the ipad, you shouldnt have to worry bout whether or not your in signal, atleast for the music portion.
