Get your mind out of the goat gutter...

I bought a GEN V mercruiser 454 w/ an extra pair of heads and an extra intake manifold from my buddy for $150 :eek1:

It was in a boat with like 20 hours on it that sunk... Fresh water cooled and was submerged for about a week. So I didnt take a gamble though, he had already tore it all down and cleaned it all up and the thing is mint. Little bit of surface rust on the cylinders but nothing the 100 over punch wont take care of :D

So I know I need special head gaskets to run mk 4 heads on the Gen V block. I was curious if anyone as familiar w/ these mercruiser blocks as far as how far I can punch it over and some big block basics.

The cutlass is gonna breathe fire!

I would probably go .030 or .060 over, if you really want to go .100, then have it sonic checked first. But I would leave yourself room for another overbore down the road if possible.

A big block in the cutlass sounds pretty bad@$$ to me!

Well, you can have enough power, but you can never have too much!

What's your engine budget? You could make a 496....:waytogo:

Also, I believe I read people are putting the A-body headers in the G-bodies with very minor mods, since the G-body headers go around the steering shaft or something. You might want to check into that. G-bodies are the lightest full framed cars GM made, with a good working suspension. It willl be a nice ride. Here's a teaser of my regal... just a little 388, right now.

At some point the thing will get stroked and a roller cam but not right now.

The original idea was a vortec 383 first then a really spendy 496 later. But now that Ive got the big block already Im gonna go budget.

Not sure about a marine block, but my machinist said alot of BBC's can only go .060 max, and have enough rigidity left to get the rings to seal good, so I'd go .030, to save a little for future if needed, or like others said, sonic test it first.

Mwuhahahaha.

"Big block" and "budget" are words that cannot exist in the same sentence. Hear me now and believe me later. :deal:

Shhhhh

It can when your "budget" build is in comparison to an all out build...

Im expecting:

$300 for pistons
$100 for a bearing kit
$500 for GMPP aluminum heads from work
$400 for a cam

Plus machine work for new cam bearings and bore and hone. And gaskets.

Id NEVER bore a block any more than absolutley necessary to clean it up, the added CID is negligable to performance anyways, and theres always another boring or maybe two that it will handle.

A week after I got the 88 monte SS out of my head again finally, this thread comes up again lol. I think a G body will probably be my next hotrod.

You wanna hear words that cannot exist in the same sentence? "budget", "big block", "stroker", and the real kicker, "BUICK"

I'm into my 471CI big block Buick to the tune of $12,000. But she's built durable and strong, with about 640 hp on pump gas to boot.
