because then ill never get the truck rust free and painted. I asked them for a rough quote on the truck being stripped of rust and painted, with 1 major dent removed. I told them i didnt care about the small dings. They gave me a quote for first just the paint, then the who truck reworked. Heres what they said...

David,
Thanks for the inquiry. As you can see by our website we are a full custom shop. This is something we would deffinitely be able to handle for you. The first thing you need to understand is that the only true way to prevent rust from eventually returning is to strip the entire vehicle, do all metal work, metal prep and epoxy prime the vehicle, do any necessary body work, and then paint. Now it is very difficult for me to be able to put a number on how much the body work would cost...and as far as metal work, its billed out at $85/hr. plus parts. The paint is the easiest thing for me to price. You can expect to pay somewhere between $2,500.00 and $5,000.00 depending on the cost of the materials just for the paint. Based on what you are telling me and the pics I saw you will probably be somewhere in the neighborhood of $9,500.00 to $13,000.00 to get the vehicle looking like the one in the other pics (as far as the body)

still think thats a lot of money even for a full rework, even to alfaheaven standards:

think i can buy a rust free cab and bed and have em shipped from airzona for that much... or just buy from alfaheaven and ship it haha, anyone take a real guess?

If you're gonna take it to shows and maybe make some money off of it...still don't pay the 13k for paint and body work, that's completely crazy IMO.

Stripping a truck down to the frame, removing all the rust, all the bodywork for prep and paint. $9500 isn't unreasonable for that amount of work, especially given the condition of the truck...

but still, if i had the 9500 i would be picking up that rig in the link he posted....that thing is mint

i even think 9500 is unreasonable. I dont expect to pay more than 2 grand for a paintjob with carc, and maybe another 2 grand to sand the rust down and fix it (theres really not much other than the hood) Maybe 5 grand total, am i crazy? As i said, it dosnt need to look like the alfaheaven truck, but the rust needs to be gone and the it needs a new coat of carc

Id take the time to learn how to do body work and rust repair. It pays for itself. Otherwise it cost big money to have someone else sand the piss out of that truck. Once you start sanding, you end up seeing the REAL damage to the metal and there is always more repair then you think.

ya when I did my the body on my truck I paid $2500 for paint alone. I spent over $1K in new body parts. Then I paid $500 for my neighbor to weld in the new body panels. As it sits now I can see every area that I said that metal isnt that bad, namely the bed fenders, are now about to fall off of the truck, although the paint on them still looks bad ass. I never did strip the body down I just replaced what had holes in it and now I have to pay for what I overlooked.

Do it once, do it right. Take some pictures of the under body and show us how bad it is because all see is jsut surface rust.

I got a quote from a local shop of $2300 to fill the trim install holes and a couple of small rust areas, prime and paint my Jimmy. It's about 95% rust free and my son works at a neighboring shop. I'm guessing it would be $3000-3500 for anybody walking in. 9K isn't bad if you want a show truck, but if you want something that's going off road, I'd go to One Day Paint or some place like that.

a glass cab from us body costs nearly 7 grand so thats not an unreasonable price I think,

heh idk, i guess im shopping around monday, the paint paint on it really aint that thick, i dont think its hiding anything

I have a 91 blazer, it's been in the body shop since the 29th of December because he's a friend of mine and works on it between other jobs to cut me a break. My truck only had a few visible rust bubbles in the rockers and tailpan, floors are solid, even from underneath it didn't look that bad till we started ripping into it. I'm up to almost $700 in parts and labor just for rust repair and primer will total almost $2,000 including parts... That's no paint probably another $3,000 for a good paint job this summer. What I'm getting at Is that may not be unreasonable depending on how much rust is on that thing that you can't see. It's also possible he high bid you to get rid of you because it's a pain in the @ss job. My 2003 durango just Cost $2300 to have the drivers fender replaced and blend the fenders bumper hood and doors, yeah insurance paid too much, but that what's a good body shop can go in less than a day, your try k and my truck will take a ton of time to do right. Just my $.02

40 hrs @ $85/hr =$3400 how many hours would it take you to do it, what's your time worth to you, looks like he's figuring on 3 weeks to do a full resto, depends on what you want. You also have to remember your driving a rolling billboard for what kind of work he does, he might not want to do something and have it look like a big piece of crap.

True, im gonna bring it in tues and get a real quote. I bouggt the truck because of the little amount of rust on it. The underbody is spotless and theres really no signs of hiding rust. I cant do the work and i dont know anyone. This is my only option and ill be busting my ass for a year to save. Meh

work

I'm still a novice, but the quote sounds about right to me. Rust is a bitch, it's always worst than you thought. I like metal work, but it has to be something you want to do and tackle, not for everybody. The shop you went to probably quoted you that high because of labor, and just how long it will take to find, and fix the truck (the places you haven't seen and don't know about). A lot of places can seem perfect, until you tap them with a tool, then you'll find the hidden rust. Shop around, or learn to do it yourself. Good luck.

the borough here bought 3 m1008s 5 years ago....they had em stripped to bare metal and painted all red, one is a dump, one had a utility body and the other is a flat bed.... they plowed the streets with the 3 of em....they are a rotted nite mare...the rockers are shot, inners are wholy, fenders in bad shape and over all they are ready to get rid of....the dump my buddy got and the body is a throw away and they took the 60 out of the flat bed and junked it.....wow huh.....mine i just fixed the cab corners the same time they were dun and mine is just like they day i got it. i was told buy alot of people that when u strip them of the paint and repaint the military trucks that they dont last long......( which thats here say crap but thats what they think) and the sad thing a good shop did them all....y maybe the salt here or bad prep.....id just scuff it up and paint the camo all over or just rattle it black.......sorry to jam up your thread.....

Seriously, search Craigslist in the southern states and find one someone else has already done and let them take the loss on it. I dont care how many shows or trophy's you win you will never recoup that kind of money for paint.

bodyshop quote

It could also be that the shop doesn't want to do it, so they quote you such a high bid to scare you off. Shops do that all the time for jobs they really don't want, but they aren't going to turn away a bid. Even if the customer decides to have the work done, the shop gets a premium for doing it.

It could also be that the shop doesn't want to do it, so they quote you such a high bid

That's a possibility. It could also be that this guy thinks you want a frame off restoration, and all you really want is someone to fix any obvious problems and then paint it. Since the quote mentions that the guy is a full custom job shop, I don't think he's setup for what you are after.

You sound like you want a maaco, earl sheib, or miracle auto paint shop. They do ok work with body filler and the paint isn't too shabby.

The thing you are competing with is insurance jobs. Most busy High end body shops dont want floor space clogged up with a big old truck. When they can use the space to bang out a bunch of $3000 fender benders. Repainting an old truck is lots more labor intensive than. Replacing a fender and a quick coat of paint. They charge so much because you are paying for the loss of income they will take because your project takes up so much time and space. As said above they most likely gave you a high bid to scare you off because they really did not want to do the job.
Your best bet is to take your truck to one of those cheaper Bondo bandit production places. Either that or paint it yourself.
I painted My K5 a couple of years ago. Used the same stock color. Good Dupont paint
Took a couple of days body work and sanding. Nother day for primer and paint. Came out looking great. Cost me about $300.
Now after 2 years of trail damage it is about ready for paint again. Good thing i can do it myself. There is no way i would pay someone big bucks to paint a truck i was just going to take out and beat up.
