So, i hope this quote from a bodyshop is a joke..

Im willing to try myself, but all i have is a driveway and no experience. I mean i dont wanna mess it up. I can sand it but not much after that. For the rest of the body i could scuff it up and repaint but id rather get it done profferionally. I cant go to normal body shop or maco cause i want it done in carc and most guys do fender benders. Hece the custom shop. Im just gonoa need to kill myself for it

Amen THUNDER!

I always figured that the looks were what sold the vehicle NEW anyway. From day 1 it goes downhill (parking lots, salt, stumps, rocks, etc.) I don't even wash mine. That's what rain is for.

because then ill never get the truck rust free and painted. I asked them for a rough quote on the truck being stripped of rust and painted, with 1 major dent removed. I told them i didnt care about the small dings. They gave me a quote for first just the paint, then the who truck reworked. Heres what they said...

David,
Thanks for the inquiry. As you can see by our website we are a full custom shop. This is something we would deffinitely be able to handle for you. The first thing you need to understand is that the only true way to prevent rust from eventually returning is to strip the entire vehicle, do all metal work, metal prep and epoxy prime the vehicle, do any necessary body work, and then paint. Now it is very difficult for me to be able to put a number on how much the body work would cost...and as far as metal work, its billed out at $85/hr. plus parts. The paint is the easiest thing for me to price. You can expect to pay somewhere between $2,500.00 and $5,000.00 depending on the cost of the materials just for the paint. Based on what you are telling me and the pics I saw you will probably be somewhere in the neighborhood of $9,500.00 to $13,000.00 to get the vehicle looking like the one in the other pics (as far as the body)

still think thats a lot of money even for a full rework, even to alfaheaven standards:

http://alfaheaven.com/MilitarySection/ChevyPickups/ChevPages/MC134.html

think i can buy a rust free cab and bed and have em shipped from airzona for that much... or just buy from alfaheaven and ship it haha, anyone take a real guess?

Find a rust free. Or you can go to usbodysource and pay 8k for a fiberglass body and never worry about dents or rust. My 74 is rust free and I paid 5k. Picked it up last weekend:laugh:

I would just buy a new body if I was gonna pay that much. The rust will eventually come back. It really depends on how long you will keep it.

Some of you guys are crazy for dropping that much on paint... rust removal I understand but paint?!?
If it was me I'd order up some patch panels, cut out the main rusty areas and weld in the new ones... take it down to somewhere that paints a TON of cars (like Maaco) and get the bare bones spray and clear coat...
Drive it and don't worry about messing up your expensive paint job since you could go back and get it painted every two years for the next 20 years for what some people spend on one paint job.
Just my $0.02...

For $13k you can probably put up a cheap garage and buy an air compressor and paint gun.

I can't imagine paying that kind of money and not having a fiberglass body when it was done. If you can't do the prep work, can you replace body panels? It might be cheaper to just buy a new body and have it painted.

Once you tackle a big project like body work, transmission rebuild, etc., you realize where the huge labor costs come from.

Pretty sure alfahaven screwed over a member here... AJMBLAZER I think.

Yup. Alfa Heaven screwed me over big time. Some of their trucks are apparently genuine nice shape solid trucks...others, like mine and IRWFO's over on Steel Soldiers' are bad body work and half ass fixes covered over with new paint and lies. Do a search over there for their name and you'll see some of the controversy about them. Also the thread from last year where I was told to STFU and stop talking bad about an "honest and respected" member/vendor despite many folks on there having severe issues with the guy, his word, and his products.

Here's my side of the story:
www.steelsoldiers.com/showthread.php?t=18311&highlight=alfa
I wouldn't recommend buying ANYTHING from them. Most of the advice the guy gave me was wrong too. Goes by majortom over there, be wary of anything you see him posting.

As far as the body goes...this is why I kept saying find one out west and drive it back. I'm still not sure what I'll do with Big Ugly. I think the fenders and wheel well liners will end up as fiberglass replacements from US Body or maybe a set of PreRunner fenders if I can find them. Not sure on the bed. Either eventually a full fiberglass replacement (when I'm rich:rolleyes:) or a genuine rust free bed from outside the rust belt (where I'll hopefully be living eventually). The cab...? Not sure. It's not bad NOW but if I ever have to drive it in the salt, could get bad. The rockers are a half ass fix by Alfa (bondo + outer skins only) and if I get the time and money I'm going to have a friend put square tube in their place as others on here have done. A fiberglass cab would be great but wouldn't be an option until I was forced to do the whole thing over again.

The truck i got from 84cucv isnt bad, I mean it has surface stuff on the hood and a peice of surface on the roof, with 2 spots in the jam, Otherwise is little stuff here and there. It looks like the military trucks resist rusting more than the civilians. I think its mostly from the paint fade some sitting out in the sun due to the pattern of rust. The undercarrige is spotless and ive walked around knocking on the sheetmetal, it all sounds solid. Im gonna drive around and get quotes, i dont think itll be that high once they check it out and if i acquire the carc on my own. I think if push comes to shove im gonna drop the money in this because im not gonna fly down south and drive back, getting this one was hard enough. and id rather restore it if its able to be saved.

Sounds perfectly restore able. Probably less serious than you think too. I get discouraged sometimes when I think about what I paid and the issues it has...then I look at the big picture and realize it's better than 90-95% of the trucks here in Michigan AND 1 ton AND with 54k on it...AND it's mine.

CARC is corrosion resistant. Most of the rust issues the CUCV's have is due to lack of maintenance, abuse, and wear. Big Ugly's rockers and cab corners were rusted out before Alfa got it just because the Minnesota NG never stuck a hose up behind the rockers and washed those areas out. Similarly the passenger side wheel well liner is rusted because a battery leaked and no one ever cleaned it up properly.

Sorta. Rockers will get square tube put in their place, wheel well liners will get replaced with fiberglass and anything else I can deal with until I have the time/money to do more.

Hell, you know me. I'm one of the weirdos over on SteelSoldiers who actually cut up his truck and did horrible things to it...like add a radio and give it a bit more power!
I'm not about to make it into a truggy or take it to Moab but I'm not looking to keep it 100% pristine original. I've hauled drywall with it, towed a trailer, and can drive it daily along with trail ride.

yeah im not that crazy but i dont wanna cut it up for a radio, how did you tow with it though, dunno how to use that pintle hook or whatever it is?

Built a receiver hitch.

You don't have to cut it up for a radio. Well, you cut a little but only enough to fit the radio.

The link to my CarDomain page is in my profile. Pics there.

thanks, i was just gonna buy a set of LOUD speaks for my ipod since i dont listen to the radio anyway. Ill check out the picks, i cant fab but im curious how you did it, guess im not towing with my m1008 unless i get a military trailer.

Father in law is excellent with a torch and welder. We got a receiver hitch that was wider than the frame rails and cut and welded to make it work.
