So I'm starting to seriously consider a tow rig.

how much work do you have into yours time wise? I'm thinking for now I better stick with just getting a 12V... I like the idea of mechanical fuel injection. :) Don't have time for a project of that scale right now... I don't think.

I'll give you $8k for yours when you're done with it! :D
a buddy of mine put a decnetly built 94 cummins into a 95 crew cab long bed f350 on like a 8" lift with 40s. when he sold it he was asking 10k, but told me he would have went as low as mid 8s.

i was just talking to my mail man monday about his '89 f350 he want's to sell. it's got the na powerstroke, srw, crew cab, longbed. i'll be posting it in the for sale section when he gets me the specifics and some pics. he just scored a cheap '97 dually so he needs to unload it. sounds like truck.

No deal:D

I have A LOT of time put into it. Most of that time is just figuring out what I want to do. Actual work I must say I'm in the 80 hour range.

If you are going to go for a 12v, I would most deffinitally find a manual. The stock automatics aren't worth much unless they have had a few tune ups. Mind you, the manuals have their downfalls but the main issues with them can be addressed and prevented before an issue happens.

I 2nd that, find an extended cab 12v manual trans, and honestly unless you are looking to make over 350rwhp a first gen (89-93) would be fine as well. They use the VE pump and although not capable of the numbers a P-pump is they are more then capable of handling what you are looking for.
12 valve Cummins are generally considered to go 6-700k with out a major rebuild and the rebuild kits themselves are not that expensive, of course there are quite a few 12 valvers out there that have passed the million mile mark and are still running strong.

hey

Go with a Cummins. I couldn't afford the NEW ones but believe me I'm REAL happy with my tow rig and DD. It hauls my Blazer or whatever around I want just nicely. Its still all stock, no chips, no nothing and still pulls great, on the hills all I gotta do is down shift to 4th and up I go. IF you do go 95-02 Cummins GET THE MANUAL TRANNY!!!. Anyway, The newer Diesels are amazing. FORD CHEVY DODGE it doesn't matter these days, the newer diesels are amazing. I'm partial to the Cummins. I want to buy an older 12V truck also and play with it. Heres my Baby.

The old Crew on the trailer was a heavy mother and The truck pulled fine. That heavy old Dana 60 now sits in my Blazer:D

I have a 81 2wd one ton Chevy crew that now sits in my backyard cuz I bought a 92 Ram 350. I have thought about doing a swap but the only benefit I would get would be the full second seat instead of jump seats.

The Dodge you listed is alot over priced you can find them alot cheaper down here. I paid $3500 for mine its only 2wd most 4wd were in the $5000 range.

I used to build those bumpers! They were really pretty well built. Hopefully you didn't get one I built.... I was just learning to weld then.

I'd love to lose the 454 in the crew cab... It sucks for mileage and has no power going up hills...

I've towed with my buddies '98 Dodge CTD and it's night and day compared to the Chevy...

If I had the means, I'd tow with a Dodge...

I blew up the 454 in another buddies crew cab towing over I-90...

Also used another buddies '96 Ford f350 with a power stroke... It did great and kept up with the Dodge...

Towed with a 6.2 Burb and it was a dog... Tranny went out and the Dodge towed it up the pass with the 10k trailer and a 1 ton Blazer behind it like nothing...

Someone has that on video...:haha:

a first gen (89-93) would be fine as well.

I can't stand the way those look... hideous. :D Dodge didn't make a decent looking vehicle till their trucks in '94. I'm pretty partial to that mid-late 90s look and the current model year, but the early 2000's I wasn't so interested in.

Looks-wise, the first gens, people love em or hate em :wink1:. I'm not a huge fan of them , but done right I have seen a FEW that I liked. 2nd gen is what your after then, 94-98.5 are the 12 valvers and the manuals are all 5 speeds (nv4500's), the 98.5 -02's are the vp44 pumped 24 valves. The vp44 has a bad rap, some of it deserved, but generally caused by bad lift pumps. My 00 24 valve has 290k on it (I bought it w 100k) , I had the vp go out at 260k, I replaced it and added a FASS lift pump, other then that it only has minor mods. I pull loads of 7-13k all the time and I can honestly say it does it great, mine is an extended cab long bed 4x4 with 33" tires and my unloaded mpg's are 20-22 and loaded I have never had less then 16-18mpg.

Just to pic whore a bit :D
Here's my 2000 with my brothers motor-less Jetta on the trailer :wink1:

that's a good lookin ride. would you have a moment to take a pic with the doors open so I can see how large the cab-space is behind the front seat?

Here are my two doners to get your mind set.

That is going to be sweet , once my cummins K5 is done, I think a ctd crew w a 6' bed may be the next project :D
If you don't mind me asking, what kind of miles are on the dodge and what did it set you back? 2wd right?

Colby, sorry for the highjack ;)
