I thought it was something I'd just added(mods have all of maybe 1500 miles on them), so I checked torque on everything for the 4th time.. all good. I'm a little miffed at this point...

Then I notice that my drivers front tire has some weird wear going on, the outer edge is getting worn faster than the rest. Not sure how I missed that before :doah:

Jack up the front end and.. jiggle the tire :eek1: Movement isn't as bad as the 89 was, but it's definitely the ball joints. At least this time it should be faster since I did the ones on my 89.. and I was able to get Spicer Pro Grades for $122 shipped 3 day from Rock Auto :D

Now, I got a question.. how safe is this to drive? I've got at least 600-700 miles to drive before I can get to this.. otherwise I'm stuck in my bro's POS Super Beetle :doah:My steering is still fairly decent, but I attribute that to the passenger side being pretty tight still.. I'm just going to do both sides to be safe.

On a side note, I want to replace the u-joints while I'm in there.. regular old Spicers?

Hey, sounds familiar! Want to come do mine for me? :)

I haven't seen any bad wear on my tire, but I'm sure my ball joint has been bad for quite some time, although I took it apart due to the steering arm being worn out.

I'd hate to say it's safe to drive, and have it fail on you though. Is it the upper or lower, if that even makes a difference? I have no idea how far they can go before they are "unsafe", I'd expect as soon as there is noticeable movement.

You got all 4 ball joints for $122 from rockauto?

GMPD says:

GM PART # 14039008
CATEGORY: All
PACK QTY: 1
CORE CHARGE: $0.00
GM LIST: $70.02
OUR PRICE: $41.51

Reference first two links here:

Does anyone see the passenger side joints I'm missing?

$41.51 sounds like a really good deal, even with shipping that might be worth it.
Non-NC Residents Total:
$54.46 (price with shipping as an FYI)

Yeah I just ended up getting Spicer Premiums.. I paid for the 3 day delivery so I know I would have them.

Seems to me they have lowered the prices, when I did the 89 back in like November, it was 40 something for the Premiums.. now they are $25.

The ball joints are same side to side.. there are two uppers and two lowers.

No idea what's bad.. I'm assuming both since I can move the hub(with the tire on it) up an down by hand.

wait - you're getting them for $25/ea right now? i need to do mine too, but couldn't afford the $40/ea ones, so i've been putting it off since i've been having to replace the cheapo's so often. i could do $25/ea tho.

Yeah it was $103 + S&H.. UPS ground was like $10 to Vancouver.

I was shocked too..

When I talked to Curt Warner Chevy here in town, they quoted me full dealer retail :doah:Guess they aren't hurting too bad for business.

I went with Spicers since I have read ZERO complaints of the Pro-Grades.. some folks have had issues with Moog, but it is the internet..

BTW the Moogs were $50 a piece when I ordered the ones for the 89.. they have come down.

on the rock auto website i'm seeing the spicers at avg. 25 each for the professional grade and 31.50 each for the moog joints. do you have a preference between the two?

I edited after I saw your edit! :D

I used the "Red Labels" on the 89.. due to the price at the time of ordering, spending 200 on bj's(:doah:) seemed stupid since I was going to swap to flat tops in a year or two anyways.

I have yet to read anything negative about the Pro-Grades.. Moogs seem to cause issues for some, but that's only what people post online.

I don't know about the Pro's, but if they have the zerk fitting in the middle like the Red Labels I put in my 89, then I don't think it'd be easy. The zerk clears the shaft okay, but it'd be hard to get a grease gun in there. Been a while since I looked at it so we'll see. I shot them full of grease before I put the axle shaft in.

consider replacing the zerk with an angled zerk fitting. perhaps you could get it that way.

any parts store carries a selection of replacement zerks. you can get them at a variety of different lengths and angles. i'm partial to 41*... :rotfl:

Got my balljoints from Rock Auto...

The uppers came with angled fittings :D

The lowers came with both zerks and then caps to replace them when they are greased up to keep them from being knocked off.

that's pretty slick with the cap. which ones did you end up buying again?

Spicer Professional Grades.. on the website it says Spicer/Rabestos Pro-Grade.. but they are 100% Spicer Pro-Grade.

Are the Spicer Pros uper joint greasable with the axleshaft installed?

I think he was asking because the Moogs are greasable with the shafts installed. The zerk is on the edge and not on the bottom so the axle doesn't interfere with it.

Yep, that was my question. Hey Jonathon, do you mind snapping a pic of the spicer upper showing the grease hole?
TIA Kenny
