So lets have a serious Cummins vs 6.5 discussion

I would only buy a Dodge if it had a Cummins. Mine was in a pusher bus. Pump is the only major difference, and then it's stuff that is easily swapped. A local yard has a contract with FedEx express, whenever they junk it the yard gets dibs. Couple years ago they had over a dozen 110% complete motors. They would cut the bodies off, cut frame behind tranny, cut rear out, then sell it like that. I could have gotten whole deal for $1200. Some where 160, some 175. But they all ran, and had everything there. But story of my life, right place wrong time. Never had the money to get one.

The rpm range I was referring to is a stock 160hp 12v is governed at 26-700 right? The Detroit is 3600. We all know pretty much nothing makes the low end torque of the Cummins, but basically I just made the comparison of a similar stock build.. Ex stick a hx35 on a 6.2 or 6.5 and you'll see 200hp 500lbft.. Low boost of course and all being equal it's still cheaper to do that than any Cummins swap. Plus it still retains excellent fuel economy and cheap parts etc.

6.2s and now my 6.5 are governed to 4250. Honestly if my 6.2 didn't leak so bad I would leave it. It has reasonable power esp after retarding the pump to help low end boost lag.

Turbo is different, exhaust manifold, fan hub, #2 bell housing, starter, intake manifold, thermostat housing.. lots of these are different on the industrial engine vs. the Dodge version. I actually went the other way, those that are familiar with my "bankout" build thread, I went the other way and semi converted a Dodge B series back to Industrial. Wish I would have just started out with an industrial B series in the first place. I bought a clean 5.9 out of a '92 D250 for $900, so I ran with that one.

They can actually go to 3600 and not blow up? It thought they were regulated at 3200. Regardless, upper RPM's are really not that beneficial, especially with a stick trans. That is my biggest gripe with the obs 7.3 PSD Fords, both of mine have stick trans and they are slow 0-60. They lack low end torque, and unless I rev it to the sky, every time I shift it falls back below the power band and they have to "fight" through the lower RPM range until it gets back into the power at 2100+. But, that is typical with V8 diesels, that's why they are better mated to an auto where the inline 6's do better with stick trannies.

Just like in dirt track there are 2 sides of the curve the front side and the back side. In the mud wheel speed is important.

Both 6.2's I have seem to hit the govenor at 3600 rpms, give or take a few hundred...just like my Briggs & Stratton lawnmower engine..

You rev the Briggs beyond that and you risk putting the rod through the block...the 6.2's crank probably wouldn't live long revving higher than that too..(some don't even survive daily street use !)..they seem happier under 2800 rpms..

I sometimes let my 6.2 wind up to about 2500-2800 by holding it in a lower gear longer,if I need to make a speedier getaway merging into traffic..not sure if it really does make it any faster, but it does sound better !..

I've not driven a 6.2 or 6.5 with a turbo, but I would not want to use a naturally aspirated one to tow with...not when they cant even make the truck get out of its own way if there is any hills...maybe if your just poking along at 30-40 mph it would do OK...

Depends on your topography. My area is flat enough that the N/A 6.2 has plenty of power, and I don't have any problems keeping up with traffic. But throw it onto even a 5% grade and my 3.08 gearing starts to show its downside. Add a trailer and a steeper grade and the 3.73 in the 'burb is much better at keeping its speed.

5.9 B series RELIABLY will go 300-500K, without any work internally. Just adjust the valves every 100K and change the oil every 10-15K, oh and do this while making 350HP and 800ft lbs.

What's up? It has room....

I know that my inbox was recently caught falsely reporting that it was full (it somehow forgot how to count). I ended up deleting a bunch of PMs, and the problem went away. @coloradok5 said the issue should be resolved now. Perhaps you're seeing the same thing? :dunno:
