So..My booger bumper build

don't use herc. i've been sorely dissappointed with it in the body of my blazer. you can't clean it worth anything and it's not very durable - scrapes off real easy. i followed directions to the T.

I notched like so...then bent it using my hi-lift under the rear bumper. worked great.

I will be coping your bumper exactly if you to don't mind.
I don't understand how you bent it though. I would just heat it up with the rose bud while clamped to my table but would like more detail on how you did it please, Thanks.

Cut a notch, put that side up.

Now (not shown), put another piece of steel or good SOLID lumber underneath a foot, say, on the far side of the notch, leaving empty space under the notch.

Put the Hi-Lift base on one side of the notch, and ratchet away. Basically you're pushing against the truck on the top and the ground and the steel or lumber on the bottom... so it folds into the empty space.

I found that once the bend was *started* -- like, say, 10 or 15* -- I could bend it the rest of the way with the prybar (far right side of pic.) Getting it started manually, however, was out of the question.

Make sense?

Makes perfect sense and way cheaper than the amount of gas it would take to get it hot enough to bend. Thanks for the explanation.:D

I was actually going to ask you how that worked out. your tub came to mind when I thought of herc.

I bogarted dremu, you can bogart me. Looks like he explained the bendy part, Ive got something to add to what he said:

I bent the channel until the center of it hit the ground. I measured how far out the block of wood was from the bend, then marked the channel that distance on the other side. that Way I could set the block in the same spot and I would have the same angle bent once the center of the channel touched the ground.

that is a nice bumper...i want to see the one dremu built w/2x8 tubing...i want to make 1 that will hold air.

how about a thread link dremu...we need a bumper build thread thats sticky, w/everyones bumper builds in it, not just the ''looking for bumper, etc, etc'' sticky.

I forgot to mention how great that bumper looks.

By the way.. you should paint that hood flat black.. or maybe a carbon fiber texture.. you know, all the ricers do that since it's JDM, yo :haha:It adds 50hp!

Yeah, that blue isnt doing anything for my hp... Ive been thinking matte black, but then Im considering painting the entire truck jet black. thus, the hood remains unpainted-so much uncertainty.

I did a bit of bumper metal finishing last night, got it primed and painted. a good friend works as a commercial sandblaster, he can just run it through when I figure out what I want to coat it with. Apparently, Rhinoliner requires a primer coat or it wont stick? thats what one installer said, craziest thing Ive ever heard.

Also got the winch in, got a control switch mounted in the dash. inside winch controls are the only way to go man...

I ran that smittybult winch for the first time last night, no cable on it. The spool on the motor side heated up to the point I could lay my hand on it- and rather quickly. Ive never had a warn do that to my recollection, im calling the manufacturer today to see what they say.

i did a search...dremu bumper & i must have over looked it...does the quotation marks matter?
thanks anyway!

edit: aaww i see why it didn't jump out at me...i didn't check ''thread started by'' and it really thinned it down when i did...

Thats defiently not normal. I am running a 10,000 pound smittybuilt and have stalled it, maxed it out, doubled with a snatch block, basically beat the hell out it. It has never got hot enough that you couldnt touch it let alone think it was a problem

thats what I thought oto. I have the same winch in a 9500 on my trailer, its never done it. Of course, you dont get to touch the spool too often with it being under the cable.

I called smitty today, the dork I talked to said it is to be expected. He wasnt a tech, i didnt really see the relevance in his opinon. Im calling tomorrow to talk to a guy in the know.

i like it!

thanks! Me too!

Its been on the truck for awhile now, Ive hit my share of junk with it. its great, exept it seems everything I hit gravitates to the winch fairlead.:doah: I gotta get some sort of prtection around it. IM thinking about adding a pushbar, like the ARB style bumpers.

Also, a little update on the hot winch thing. I finally talked to a tech at smittybilt, they said it was because the winch is brand new, there's a break-in period for the electric brake, and thats creating the heat I felt. makes sense I guess.

I know this is an older build, but i am new here and i love it! I have been looking for a front bumper with a similar look and definitely strength. Right now i have the factory 79 bumper on the front and i have a home made rough tube bumper to put on it, but i'm not too thrilled with the tube bumper, want something more like what you built. I was wondering if you have measurements for this? such as total length, length from outside to each bend, and outside to winch opening?

by tomorrow I meant 'in a month or so'...sorry!

took some measures today, the winch opeing will be based on whatever winch you use. In oder to center my winch in the frame rails, the opeing had to be offset- the winch isnt a balanced unit because of the motor.
