3C55EEEA-51CF-498C-9546-D75BFA03540F.jpeg so decided to find less of a project and pulled the trigger today.
Everything is set for pickup tomorrow and arrival next Wed. So gonna be a long wait....
It’s a 1975 GMC Jimmy so same as blazer as far as I know just different badges unless someone tells me different.
Got tons of pics so feel comfortable but the transmission started having problems so got a deal on it.
That will be the first issue to tackle then have someone go through the rest of drivetrain
Pretty excited to be able to work on it over winter ready to roll when the weather gets warm again..
My DIY projects are
Tune engine as needed
MileMarker NP203 Shaft Kit
Rust converter then rubber coat interior and undercarriage
Leather seat swap (what’s best) for comfort
Prob a1000 other things it will need
Then
Eventually paint it either hugger orange or lime green after any body work needed...

If the tranny is gone are you going with something with overdrive?

Looking for recommendations on best and easiest practices so I don’t have to recreate the wheel.
Is there a pretty easy trans that can be easily swapped that I should be on the lookout for?
Not to famialair with drive trains and lack of proper tools for heavy stuff so will have to farm out that portion I’m sure

Swapping to something with overdrive is something I wish I did but probably still will in the future.

700 swap will also involve driveshaft changes front/rear, crossmember, linkage changes, steering column change, and throttle cable/bracket on the carb to handle the TV cable which will be different than the 350 trans you likely have now.

Just went down this road with a friend's '79, and we ended up just rebuilding the 350 trans thats in it now (which actually ended up being a really cool learning experience for her as well).

Ya that sounds like way too much extra work lol
Guess I’m gonna stick to the original idea getting trans rebuilt or replacing it with the same unit and putting in the miler maker shaft kit to help on gas a bit...
Thanks for recap didn’t realize all the extras that would be needed....

Just what was the TH350 doing to be considered "going out" ?..

It might end up being something simple to fix--I bought more than one GM vehicle with a TH350 that was supposedly "blown",but all that was wrong is they would not upshift until you hit the redline in each gear..it was the vacuum modulator (or no vacuum going to it,or it was hooked up to a ported vacuum port, when it needs manifold vacuum)..

When the modulator isn't getting vacuum or it's diaphragm ruptures,it will be slow to upshift, usually it wont go in second until your going like 30+ mph, then it'll hang in second up to around 45-50 mph--then finally go into third..then,when you let off the gas,the transmission will feel like there is no engine braking,it will "free wheel",or feel like its in neutral--applying throttle again will make it feel like it goes back into gear..

One truck I bought would not go in third gear--it was the detent cable had stuck in the "passing gear" position,it was kinked badly behind the engine..another cable cured that issue..

Only one TH350 I had did have serious issues--one of which was "no reverse"..sometimes it would go in reverse if you were willing to wait up to 5 minutes after shifting to reverse..but it felt weak ,and it would slip if you had to back uphill..one day I couldn't get it to go in reverse any more,so I bought a known good used tranny to swap in..

One I had in a '72 K5 would refuse to go into any forward gear until the engine warmed up..reverse worked perfect instantly!..

I tried a new filter, fluid, modulator, with no difference..several guys familiar with TH350's said it was the forward clutch piston seals, they get hard after years and the piston wont apply pressure to the forward clutches until they warm up and soften and let it move..

I was told to try adding a pint of brake fluid, that did nothing, then a few other guys suggested trying various additives,I even tried a pint of Lestoil cleaner one guy swore by ,to free up sticky valve body parts--nothing changed,I couldn't move it until the engine started warming up,on winter mornings this might take a good 10 minutes--once it went in forward gears it drove fine,no slippage, and shifted normally,I could drive it 500 miles with no problem, but let it sit overnight ,it did the same thing again..

I ended up putting a SM465 4 speed manual in it--had another truck for a parts donor..had to change the driveshafts, install everything behind the engine--not a job I'd care to repeat even if I were 35 again..

Bottom line is your TH350 may not have major issues...but even if it does, they are one of the easier transmissions to rebuild I'm told..
I never "missed" not having overdrive--most of my 1/2 ton trucks had 3:08 gears and they cruised at 65 no problem, had a few with 3:73 gears, they wound up higher on the interstate, but not excessively --if they had 4:56's then I would have been wanting overdrive..

TBH I got a deal on this 75 because the owner said the trans was leaking and it started clunking when going into second gear..He said in a text that it will need a new or rebuild on trans..I thought it was undrivable until yesterday.

It’s on a trailer on its way from AZ right now so hopefully u r tight and maybe it’s just low on fluids with a leak or another simple fix, I might have jumped ahead since I was originally told the tranny was shot but just got this new info yesterday when they were able to drive the truck for transit up ramps no problem....
I will have more info early next week and go from there...

That is where I need to go if I ever have the cash to buy another old GM truck..I'm so sick of RUST and ROT ...every single issue on all my vehicles is related to rust or corrosion 90% of the time..

I'd feel guilty taking a nice rust free desert truck up here to watch it rot away in 5 years though...maybe I'd be better off if I stayed there instead..

I will not drive it in winter and will DIY bed liner interior and Oil the undercarriage so hopefully I won’t let it get eaten by the rust monsters....

Congrats on your 75! I bought mine used in 1980 and I still have it, its a great solid truck. I put an 4 wheel drive camper on it for years, now I have the soft top. I'm in the process of installing a sbc 383 / 700r4 / np205, it has been a lot of work so far. I HOPE to have the kinks out next week, I have been working on this for over a year.

Congrats, I bought my 75 in Oklahoma but it was a SoCal truck that spent a lot of its time in Baja area. Rust free is hard to find much less on a 69-75, I found two rust spots on the whole truck, two quarter sized spots behind both rear tires. Easy peasy

Great, one less Blazer for me to see in AZ. I've only seen one square body the last few years driving to work.

That’s how I feel sometime but quickly remember all the clean trucks at the junkyards. Rather them leave the state whole than leave the country crushed.

I see one every day...one of the mechanics here daily drives a 80's pickup, and another guy occasionally drives a '69-'72 K5, along with my '86 being a regular showing up until the motor seized. Whenever I finish the new motor, it will again see daily duty.
