So...would a loose as heck 241 chain sound like a near constant rattle?

I hear a rattle when The Blazer is idling or going at really low speeds.

Climbed under it today and realized it's coming from the t-case. Seems to be. Least it's not the flywheel.:doah:

So what's a 241 sound like when the chain is rattling around?

In 2WD it'd be quiet as a church mouse...the chain wouldn't be moving at all, especially if the truck is going slow enough to crawl under and listen. ;)

Your rear drive shaft may be out of balance. Mine lost it's counterweights and rattled like hell at the slip yoke. It also had a harmonic vibration at 65-70mph.

Our you could check all the bolts down there. The 1" jackets on the t-case cross member bolts can rattle pretty good.

I'll check those.

Sure as hell sounds like it's coming from the t-case.

I had a 241 loosen itself from the mount plate.

Check all bolts for tightness.

My 90 sub makes a strange noise at slow speeds that I thought was the throw out bearing(150K on an original)

You've got me wondering.Let us know what you find.

T-case crossmember bolts are good and tight. However one is missing the spacer. WTF are those spacers and super long bolts for anyway?

I should mention I hear this noise in idle with it in park, not just moving. Believe it does it as I go faster, just can't tell being a diesel and all.

Is the fluid level good. I've had most all of the fluid leak out of the slip yoke, then if your bearings are getting worn, you might hear them rolling when it's slow and quiet. When speed and noise(and quite possibly centrifigul force) increase the noise goes away.

I don't really know.Just a guess. I'm here to learn too.

Sad to hear your getting rid of your truck. I wish I could swing it.

Just can't justify having it and my needs are different now.
(Also tired of having to fix stuff like this on ALL my vehicles.)

Mine leaks out of the rear output. We had a fiasco a year ago replacing the seal and bushing and that didn't help at all. However every few months I pull the plug and and stick my finger in and there's fluid right there.
(Yes, the transmission level is fine, I check.)

He was talking about the bolts between the tcase and adapter (or adapter and transmission). Since your transmission has been replaced in the past I would suggest checking those first... then move on to all the braces and cover bolts. Also, vibrations will transmit through the drive train very well and be very hard to pin down.

If you hear it at idle in park, then it really seems unlikely its a chain. If the chain is so loose that it is flopping around in the case at idle, I don't see how 4wd can work at all.

From what I can hear from here, it sounds like a bad exhaust pipe hanger....

The torque converter could have a broken vane in its impeller,or the front pump might have a chip in the gears..I'd say its not the transfer case if you hear it sitting still at idle,as nothing in it is moving then..its a rotating part between the crank and the tranny tail most likely..are you 100% sure the flex plate is not cracked around the bolts holding it to the crank?/..torque concerter bolts tight??..starter drive gear isn't touching the flywheel?..all of these thiings can cause a ticking or rattling noise..

Great. Again, when laying under the truck the sound comes from right around the t-case.

No clue on what it could be. Let us all know when you get it solved. Good luck!

Sounds can reverberate through the drivetrain and sound like they're coming from places that they aren't.

Pull the inspection cover on the trans and see if your flexplate is cracked, very common failure.

yep, with trans in park the output shaft of the trans is locked and can not spin the transfer case. That being the case, It needs to be between the parking pawl and the flex plate.

My $ would be flex plate or loose torque converter bolts.

Im having a similar problem in my 89 K5, when at low speeds its making a speed sensitive clunking or rattle and it follows right with your speed until about 40mph i suppose (if its there its hard to hear over exhaust). can feel it in feet too at low speeds. i limped it the 25 miles home, at 60mph lol, when i looked underneath it was a oily mess, front pinion seal i believe, soaked everything from front diff, down driveshaft, t-case, mounts, rear diff and gas tank!! but the clicking/rattling seems to be coming front rear end (axle bearing?) its loud enough to hear if you stick head out window. i hate noises like that, same reason what some of you guys said, noises and vibrations travel through drivetrain. i think i got the pinion seal leak locked down though lol.......

I had a loose oil slinger on the SF rear axle of my '74 GMC,it used to jingle, rattle, sound like a woodpecker, and sometimes if I'd stop quickly,I'd hear it still spinning a few seconds after I had stopped!..it would do it only some of the time,I could drive it weeks and not hear a peep, other days it did it non-stop!.

I tried center punching the outside diameter of it to help "stake" it back onto the yoke, but it never lasted long..then one day I found J-B Weld "Putty",and I was trying to seal a leaky oil pan with it--I took a thin "roll" of it and placed it where the oil slinger seated and I "puttied" over that area to the yoke too--never heard any more weird noises from THAT thing!..

on my old 85 I had an odd clanking sound louder at low rpm but seemed to go away at rev . then when you coasted it returned . was a 305 70r4.

What the problem was turned out to be loose bolts between the flexplate and the torque converter. at idle or low rpms it woudl chatter . eventually it elongated the holes and chattered more. at speed it would bind or hold and not as noticible..
then at coast it would slip and chatter again..
