So ya wanna daily drive your K5/10/20/30. What would be your ideal setup?

Sorry but I dont think I'd ever DD a 81-87 again...

Simply because of the interior. Its just not comfortable and the dash and under dash are a pain to work on.

If I was gonna DD a fullsize again it would be a 96-98 OBS with a vortec 350, 1 ton axle swap with about 3in of lift and 37 hummer tires.

That being said when I do pick up my build again its gonna be an s10. Fullsize is just too big for trail riding here.

My Blazer.

Maybe a NV3500 or similar manual trans. However my new DD has a stick and it can sometimes get frustrating/tiring in traffic but I still enjoy banging the gears the rest of the time.

6.2L, 700R4 with a nice build to it or a manual OD trans, axles with 3.73's (half tons would be fine), 32-33" narrow mud tires with plenty of siping, AC, tinted windows, and cruise.
I will say with diesel prices being as they are and the cost of parts for the diesels I might consider a nice 350 TBI truck like 84CUCV has. A bit less efficient but each fill up costs a little less and if something goes wrong the parts are cheaper and far more common.

The rest is just flavoring to taste. Some want carpet and plush, I went with Rhino Lining. I have an okay stereo system, some want competition quality or don't care at all.

What do I know though? I just retired mine to backup/fun status.

i want an 85 k10, white shortbed, 4bt 4l80 205, 3/4 tons, 33s.
i would DD the SHTI out of that!!

+1 to that. I would only DD a 96-99 OBS or a 03+ truck or tahoe

Its not even the suspension that bothers me, or the exterior. The interior is just boring and I like the amenities and function of the newer trucks.

I never thought I'd be a person so say this but the interior of the older trucks is just has lines that are too boring...

Thats why I would put 40/20/40 heated leather seats, new black dash pad, FJ-cruiser gauge pod on the dash, aftermarket removable steering wheel, upgraded speaker system, new alpine or sony head unit with satellite radio, pro-comp gauges in the cluster... and the list only continues with my imagination.. :doah:

If I could get half that stuff in there I'd be happy..

One thing I would spend the money on would be all new seals for the doors, windows, topper etc. The wind noise in these rigs is terrible, and tires me out while driving.

Interior ideas?

Your question is probably going to confuse a lot of people here, since it sure seems like everyone is in a big hurry to trade street manners and driveability for offroad capability. :D

Yep, we are going to have to discipline ourselves here.. could be quite challenging..:D:zombie8:

4" tuff country lift and shackle flip in the rear with 1 ton axles... NO... I mean... um.. 2.5" and 10 bolts and 3.73s.... err.. :doah:

My ideal DD would be updating a few things on my 91 Blazer. New engine ( possibly 383ci , but new 350ci would do), 4:10 ratio to go with the 700r4( mine lugs some with the taller tires), probably would go ahead and invest in a less aggressive tire though.

I like the idea of a diesel swap, but since I only drive 6 miles to work, I'll have to stick to a gasoline.

Anyone ever change out the A/C Heater fans?? That's honestly the only drawback that I can think of here in the South is driving the Blaze in 105 degree summer heat.

I have always wanted a 89-91 3+3 V30 with a LB7 Duramax and ZF-6 transmission front captains chairs and center console between front seats

if i daily drove something and wanted to lite wheel it id go for a add a leaf at all 4 corners which is usually 2 inch lift and 33 inch tires.that way you can keep it all fairly stock and keep parts changing to a minimum.swap in your 6.2 and run whats in it if it is all in good condition.looks like you have a 87 or at least a add for one so you already have od trans which is good and id run 3.73 or 4.10 gears in the axles.update the interior to look nice and address any rust issues and some nice new paint and drive it.

I am building what I think is going to be my favorite DD right now. It's a 71 K5 with a RamJet 350, 700R4, NP208 with a SYE, 35" BFG MT's, 4" lift, 4.88's, Twisted Engineering newer style engine xmember with a panyard bar & cross steer on the factory axles with stock interior.

Heres my DD
Untitled-8.png

76 K5 blazer
33x12.5 BFG A/T
4'' spring lift
400SBC/350/203
44 open/12 bolt open

If i had a choice for a DD with what i know now i woulda gone for a 6.2 blazer/suburban those things reliability is just unmatchable for the price from what ive seen.

Fuel tank would be large as possible with a decent skid protecting my arse.

For tires, nothing less than the new BGF km2 or the goodyear kevlars on some classic polished mickey Thompson wheels.

Didnt even think about these myself. a larger fuel tank is a facepalm moment for me, obviously the extended range is clutch. and yeah, im running the new Kevlar MTR's on my M1009, and LOVE LOVE LOVE them, but I do have to admit the KM2's have better street manners. But for leaving the paved surface, the MTR's are wayyyy better IMHO.

91 v30 crew cab w/tbi350 or 6.2, or a 6.5na swap
fits the wife and kids, all the crap you would want in the bed, pull a trailer, and get there and back reliably. gets descent mileage too.

it would need a few engine power mods. new paint and definitely seals. upgraded interior, nothin fancy, just cloth and comfortable. hurc under some new carpet, sound deadener in the doors, electric locks, tilt, smaller steering wheel, good stereo, power steps for the wife an kids.
4" lift front, crossover steering
shackle flip rear, take a few leafs out, and air bags on top. oba, with some storage tanks for the train horns
detroit rear, 5.13s and some 11.0 michelins.
ranger o/d sm465, nv4500, or 4l80e. doesnt matter

the only problem is parking, but walking the extra 100 feet is better for you anyways.

guess im to young to care about interior comfort haha bucket seat or bench seat, flat striaght dash heck i dont care lol i daily drove my truck for a day with a 5 gallon bucket as a seat when mine got water logged hahah

For me the main things that are important to improving my K5's everyday driveability are:

-quiet interior
-comfy ride with nice heated leather seats for the cold winters here
-another set of tires for winter that are studded (no foolin' around mang :waytogo:)
-security
-good stereo system
-no sticky gas pedal
-good brakes that don't squeak
-air conditioning
-acceptable fuel mileage (mine actually isn't too bad for a K5)
-quick and easy starts and eventually a remote starter
-working horn button
-better exhaust system that isn't leaking, loud and annoying

Those are some of the things that are on my growing list.. when they will happen is another question..
