SoCal '85 6.2L Jimmy build

moor Doors

I decided to redo the kick panels on the door. They aren't super durable now since I just used the same speaker carpet as before, but it will work for now. I might put vinyl on it later if i get to it.

some pics.

There were some nice weekend viewings of some ww2 birds flying in formation. I jumped and phone snapped a pic so such is the quality.

Greetings from a fellow '85 Jimmy 6.2 owner. I'm anxious to see what turns out with grabbing RPMs for that tach. I'm happy with my stock gauges since everything works fine, but always run tachs in all my stuff. I gotta have it! I'll just mount mine in a cup on the A-pillar (once I figure the best way to pick up revs)

Glad to see other diesel guys.

Yep still working on the tac. I am more use to looking at a tac than a speedo so it really bugs me not to have it. I've been lazy and put off finding the solution, but eventually.

LED lights

I am replacing most of the lights in the truck with LEDs a little at a time.
Courtesy of super bright leds.
Today I replaced:
rear/brake with the red 1157 towers
backup with the white 1156

I was going to replace the front markers with ambers but i went female and changed my mind. I'm taking lead from master ryoken and putting in the amber oval signals they have. I wanted more front face from the bulbs. I am probably going to put a strobe controller behind these anyway later and have some fun with the lights. The side markers I got the wrong base so I'll be testing their return policy.

BTW does anyone know what this black relay looking thing is. It has a line running over to the radiator. I found it dangling behind the wheel well shoved back into the corner. It was FULL of water. the insides show the result. There are some barely legible numbers on it:
15599001
7-8247
3283
My guess is it's the cold idle. Can't tell though.

it's a bit challenging to give a good visual assessment of the lights. I need a light meter and for evidence a nice camera would help. Something I can set exposure on.

At night there is a considerable difference in the brake lights.
The responsiveness I think is nice to have. An instant light makes me feel like followers are going to focus on it and the turn signals seem less drowsy. It's crisp.

The backup lights are probably 5x brighter. I could barely tell my backups were on before. Now they are kinda painful to look at. Cleaning up the haze on the lenses will probably make a difference.

Overall I am a huge fan of LEDs. I might add a couple extra in various places. It's a superior technology all around.

The LEDs don't blink funny/fast in the turn signal application? That's the only reason I haven't done this, I don't want the blinker on crack.

When looking for a tach for my Cummins, I came across this.

Good looking rig.

Thanks!
I can't tell yet if that will work. I'd assume it will present the right pattern, but I'll have to do more research. I think I might have a run at that when time permits.

I'll post here if other options (easier/prettier) turn up.
It's going into a autometer so I don't know if that will have much bearing at this point.

I'm reviewing all that I did in the last posts. It isn't even close to what it was.
How do I change the title anyway.

The 6.2L was relegated to the parts pile. Here is the 4BD1-T in place.
There is a lot of things that were upgraded that I will go into.

It appears that the last few posts were all at my Encino location.
I'll start posting from where I started the swap.

A little history.
I decided to button everything back up. That wasn't easy.

I DIY4X built me a dash off a mockup from Sketchup based on their design.
Sadly I think it's a pay product now.

In 2013 I took the truck as it appears previously on a multiple state roadtrip.
We his about 8 states I think. The drive was brutal. That thing handled like a bare foot fat chick on a grease lined ice rink. I thought for sure I was going to go off the edge of the road doing the rocky mountain pass.
Literally. The front was drifting with all the weight in the back, the headlights were far too dim, the steering was slop, and that 6.2L was so nutless that I could get out and walk faster.
Right before leaving for that trip my radiator blew when I changed the fluid.

We packed in there tight:

Here we are in Zion. Amazing place.

I did another trip out to Joshua Tree right after that. Of course I blew my heater core there so I had to do a field bypass fix. It was getting to be ridiculous.

JT is great. Not Zion great, but a lot of fun and close to home.
There were guys from 29 palms rolling around in tank tops and AR's on their laps wheeling their jeeps. They saw me working on my heater core in the middle of BFE and gave me some strange looks.

After I returned home it was time for the tear down.
I was working on it pretty much every day on the road and that was just not going to be a long term solution.

So, I decided to repower the the machine.
The 6.2L is a known problem and I wanted to try something new. I also wanted to apocalypse-proof the truck. Meaning make it sturdy enough to sit in my driveway. Actually I wanted to go on more overland type trips. So I wanted something strong enough to wheel out in the BFE and not break anything. I break a lot of things on this truck.

I hunted down Todd at Mercenary Offroad. He did a great job on a project called "the doomsday suburban" that was really impressive. As well as a cummins powered grand wagoneer that was top notch.

That kinda sold me on his shop.
I saved up for a very long time to start this project.

Next thing was to buy the Motor.
I decided that I would go with a 4BD1-T
  • good MPG
  • decent power for the size
  • analog
  • wide distribution in Latin Americas
That being said I found one.

It was not in the best of shape and I had to have the injectors rebuilt.
I took it to this sketchy place in Compton.

IMG_0061.jpg

Initially they wouldn't even acknowledge me since it was "lunch time". So I sat in my truck for 30 minutes while they finished. I spent the time looking for other places, but all the big commercial shops were outside of my price range and this place already started talking with me. Anyway they took a long time but eventually got it back to me running. New injectors.

What motor is this out of? Sounds like your close to me. Im near palm springs.

Some pics of the axles.
Straight out of Davy Jones locker.
Actually off a CUCV that lived in a paintball field.

Went with a dana 60 front of course.
And found an AAM rear.

IMG_0100.jpg

IMG_0101.jpg

And all cleaned up.

This took days to accomplish.
Had to have Todd here help me pretty much on each step because I had never taken an axle apart to this extent. Just hubs or brakes.

IMG_0118.jpg

I wanted to stay at 4.11 gears.
But the front of course are 4.56
The rear came 4.10 so I left it.

Front was changed by a local shop done at Todd's place.

Parts coming back from powder.
I hope it sticks. Long story.

I'll post the finished front diff a little later.
Maybe tonight once it's uploaded... grrr slow backwards merkan internets!
