I am looking at one to get but the whole thing is made of VINYL. It has tinted windows on the side that roll up. I thought that soft tops were made of heavy duty canvas or something.

Is vinyl still a good soft top?

the vinyl is probably a Best top, or old kayline. Is it snaps on the side or the rail system?

Yeah its probably a kayline. that is where stc came from. A best top from ord is 660 new.

Im not exactly sure but I think its vinyl coated canvas maybe? :dunno:

My buddy has one on his 69 Bronco for about 4 years and it still looks good. Other than a few scratchs in the windows but that will happen to any.

I have a Kayline, and the instructions that came with it recommend you wipe it down with 303 Protectant periodically to keep it from drying out and cracking.

For a 1st gen, like I have, the Kayline / STC is a much better top than a Bestop...but that's just my opinion. Only issue is Kayline went bellyup. I believe your only options now are Bestop or custom made.

The CanBack tops were "sunbrella" or something like that, a marine grade canvas. They were over $1k. The rest of them are vinyl, just like jeep tops. The material wasn't the only cost driver. They also had a frame that could support a rack on the top. 300 lbs. capacity IIRC. It was kind of a covered-wagon sort of look, square at the back, instead of angled like the Bestop, Kayline, STC, etc.

I just bought a STS for 300 bucks. Its in decent enough shape but seen better days, But atleast I have a good solid pattern I can take to a upholstery shop to have coppied. I can replicate the bows no problem myself. There fine though.

I had a Kayline snap top for my first gen and used it for about 8 years and it was used when I got it. Vinyl lasted fine and it was black. I did spray it with armor all about once a year. The plastic windows did get scratched and cracked and broke from handling it in the cold. It worked well.

Now I have a custom made one and they used convertible top material. My custom one was the same price as a new manufactured one and fits my cage well. I also had a bimini top made. Here are a few pics.
