Ok heres the good. I quit my job on friday because a company offered me a salary that I couldn't refuse. The bad news, the company is downtown Austin and requires that you park in a parking garage. The maximum clearance is 6'8" in the garage :( My K5 is 6'6" right now with 32" tires. I was planning a 4" lift with 33's but thats not going to happen now. Ok now the part I'll get flamed for. How tall are jeeps? Are they shorter than K5's? I could buy a jeep cause I'm still wanting to go 4 wheelin, but I also need it to fit in the garage. Would a 4" lift and 33's still put the jeep under 6'8"?

Man, keep your K5, put on as big a lift as you want, and get a beater to drive to work............lots of fun "beaters (defined as a cheap car or truck" that get great gas mileage. Lots of $2000 IROC Z's I have seen.

. All he did was complain about it. Maybe if you had a Jeep without knowing better it would be OK, but its pretty hard to go from a K5 down to a Jeep.
Get a beater, Escort,Sprint,Toyota. Whatever you need to get you to work and back, but keep the K5. Remember you almost always lose money when you sell and buy again. Just take the money you're more than likely to lose getting a Jeep and apply it to buying a POS.

I seriously thought about that but there is one flaw with that. I don't want to sound like a snob(I'm far from one), but the job requires that I work with large clients like southwestern bell, IBM, and ONYX software just to name a few. I need a nice ride incase I need to smooth over some execs. I would keep the K5 plus buy a jeep, but my wife and I are building a $150K house and all of my money is tied up in that. Seriously guys I just need to know how tall a jeep is.

By the looks of it, the jeep is just as tall as an S-10 Blazer or truck. They are parked next to my K5 in the parking lot right now. What year are you looking at getting? The grand cherokee is just a bit shorter than the Furd Explorer from the looks of it too.
 
Actually I'm looking at a pre 85 CJ7. My blazer is a full size, not a jimmy, so its rather tall. It just looks like in pictures that jeeps are shorter.

I have a fullsize too, the Jeep outside is a 1999+ Wrangler. Its my neighbors friends or something. He has got a 2000 Chev. Blazer. The older jeeps arent much shorter than the new ones. CJ7 is longer than the CJ5 though. I think they both came with 28"-30" tires.
 
Damn, I'm sure I'll get flamed for this but what the hell. If you might have to smooth over some clients I would avoid the CJ-7 as well. Have you thought about an XJ (Cherokee)? Comfortable, well mannered, and a pretty decent 4x4 even stock. A few simple mods make it quite a capable off road 4x4. We have an 88 Cherokee limited, and its a pretty good truck. I've wheeled with some guys that have these and I can attest to the fact that they are a decent 4x4. 5'4" tall stock. Also seats 5 comfortably and gets pretty good mileage.

Just park in the street. Your contract really said you HAVE to park in this garage? Park in the street, show your style, walk to work, and get exercize. Or you could pawn off your k5, get a little beamer, or even a heep and be paying out the arse for parts. Yet you'd fit in the garage and wouldn't get wet when it rains. Your choice, depending on your style. Personally I think I'd buy a set of 31x13.50x15 TSX swampers, mount them, get the truck as muddy as heck and still park in the garage next to the supervisor's Mercedes SUV where he has to brush your truck to get in. Now that would be funny.

Of course, i'm a different breed of cat. Do what you will. Good luck.

That is, unless you compare wallet size after you got from it the dealership. :) :) Tahoe vs Yukon, same truck, $8000 differnece. Yes they have different standard options packages.
 
Off topic but hwat happens to your status ie, old hand, member, etc.. when you get over 1000 posts?

I've had the same problem, with a 4" lift and 33's my truck is about 7'1" and all the garages around here are 7'0" clearance. However, I just found out last night that they all have spots on the ground level for oversized vehicles and the ceiling is almost 10' up. The top will rub the little clearance sign when I pull in but that's no different than the trees I drive under (through) on trails. You might want to check out the garage that you'll be parking in to see if it has an oversized area that they'll let you park in regularly. You'd get to park on the first floor too, no stairs!

I don't understand how a dang Jeep is gonna impress or even smooth over some Docker wearin' Executive (I work for SW Bell) unless ya LEASE a Grand Cherokee like most of the other yuppies. Ya sound like yer on the edge of turnin'a corner, guy...buy a used Accord, 626, camry or somethin'...Payments on a $150K house are under $1200...if ya sell yer K5, yer gonna be payment poor just like all the other yups..."Ya spend money ya don't have to buy something ya don't need to impress people ya don't like"...if yer truck is 6'6"...leave it alone and drive it...a year from now you can get some Yupmobile to impress somebody...just my .02...JD
 
Damn i don't know what the hell is wrong with my truck. I have 6.5"s of lift and 35" super swampers. I clear the 7ft garage here at school and i am putting on a 1" bodylift and the 1" leaf pack lift and i still should fit fine. As far as i know my truck is like 6ft 9.5"s, hope i don't have any body roll. Or just some sand bags in it!! HAHAHAHA

Guys I think we are forgetting that this guy is getting a house project in too. So the means a new car is out of the question. The Jeep is a good cost effective subterfuge. Since he is getting pre-87 CJ7 it would seem he is going to go out $4000 max. I think that Jeep if clean will look good for customers. However, its been my experience that most exec.'s prefere to see an Explorer or better to smoothe stuff out. You can present the Jeep as a classic but its still a Jeep. And most I.T. and I.P.O reps. will have a certain image of you when it comes down to it. I would be more inclined to rent a vehicle if I had to take a customer/ potential client out for lunch or something. Its a tax write off and you cn get a bussiness discount. Bottom line keep the K5 and park on the street. Its easier to steal a truck in a garage anyway.

Ok Ok you guys have it all wrong. I could buy a new car/suv but I don't want one. I love having a project to work on when I get home from work. I still want to hit the trails every weekend so jeep came to mind as a low cost, effective, short off road vehicle. And actually that $150K house just turned into $175 because we can afford it with my new job. They start building next week so this raise came at the right time. I would love to keep my K5 and also buy a jeep but that means that the Indian Chief motorcycle that I want, the wife will say no to 3 toys :) heh.. Actually I want to find a pre 87 CJ that someone has already spent alot of time in. I'll probably keep it around $10K. I found this one in dallas click here. Pretty sweet.
