sons first car

1986 Chevy K20 stock 350 th400 a bunch of unknowns
ok quick updates on the sons truck.
yesterday I taught him how to switch out all new fuel hoses from the tank. as well as how to determine which line goes to were from the octopus of fuel line to the selector valve. ie vent feed, return. let's just say blowing compressed air underneath a truck thags been in someone's field for a while is not his favorite thing.
fast fwd l a couple cuss wordzan busted knuckles.
The fuel selector valve wrks, as well as the new switch for it. not to clean up an grease as appropriate

Another question my son asked an Im not sure of, he wants to go efi an the question is
the selector valve is rated at a max of 65 psi.
so in theory I could run a pump after the selector valve since it's 1 foot of the tanks.
he is looking at the pro flo system, im looking at summit racing max efi system which calls for 58 psi, edelbeock pro flo is 48 psi?
I got him hoses rated for fuel injection, that way when he is ready to switch over he has that part covered.
I also have him dreaming up a sbc build that will give him the grunt to move his truck around ( 8700 lbs).
also his tires showed up yesterday so new shoes to be pit on Dick Cepek trail country exp in 265/76r16.

Today's adventures will be to get the new tires pit on, replace rubber hoses ie axle vent lines, vacuum lines, fresh grease were appropriate.
add power steering fluid an bleed it, hopefully I won't have to replace the steering box Since that's the only leak we have seen.
then to figure out why the high beam lights don't wrk.
The top lights (regular ones work) but not the bottom ones do not come on. although we can see a difference when the switch is activated.
any help or pointers there would be appreciated.
I have been contemplating adding a foot dimmer switch to the high beams, but would rather fix the current system.

just a quick update.
we got the tires mounted
265/75r16 dick cepek
jacked the truck up to cycle the trans through the gears th400 an verify the np208 functions.
We found out thr passenger side brake caliper is frozen. So I talked myself into a MAW moment.
might as well replace the rotors, break calipers an master cylinder.
I'm hoping the axle socket that I have for the blazer fits it
only one way to tell.
we will be doing a break make over this weekend.
along with adjusting the back up switch to have the reverse lights come on once the teans is in reverse. figure out why the high beamights are not coming on.

an as always any an all input is appreciated

Check the grounds for the hi beams. Can look for 12 volts on the sockets to the bulbs.
Could high resistance, or a bad switch.
Cost a little more but a fi pump in each tank, power the pump in the tank you are using. 1 way check valve for each side, eliminate selector valve.

ill test the sockets this weekend thanks for the the tip.
wonder if its better to just delete the high beam switch in the colum an wore a floor dimner

I find the turn signal high beam switch more convenient to use than floor mounted.
My hand is normally right there and flick of the fingers to dip the lights.

It is not difficult to replace, is lower on the column, operated by a rod from the turn signal lever

OK thanks
now I'm kicking myself in the butt for not replacing it
when I had to do the ignition lock cylinder.
ill see what I can come up with. maybe the rod just needs adjustment
although I do hear it click an the top set of headlight get somewhat brighter
but nothing on the bottom row

you may find the rod is not properly seated and it moves the switch but not full travel. check both ends while operating to see if 1 side is out of position.

will do
ill check the forum
maybe there is a sticky on it somewhere

Don’t rule out the lights themselves being burnt out.

Good for you getting your son to work on it with you. My son and I have been working on trucks together since he got his when he was 13 he’s 19 now and has a full time job as a tractor technician.

well to keep this going.
the son managed to get his room clean and take the thrash out immediately after school
in order to learn how to do this.....

Efforts from his labor.
He learned how much the retainer clip around the hub is a PITA.
Install new master cylinder
rotors (now he knows how to press out the studs and press them in with an impact)
Install races and pack bearings.
Reassemble/inspect an test hubs.
Although only one side got done.
The other I will do tomorrow on my day off,
then to teach the joy of bleeding breaks

Funny you mentioned that centexk5 (central Texas k5). I have family in both Houston and Dallas. I'm from El Paso, now live in NV, after retiring from the Marines
My son showed me that bleeder system as well, but I told him I wanted him to learn how to do the basics first.
Although he has been wrenching for a while now. He has rebuild his dirt bike engine both top and bottom end as well as rebuild carbs for it. Honda 250 2 stroke. He is pretty good, but I just want to make sure he "gets it".
