Its a 383, It has roller tip rockers, not full rollers. I adjusted the valves with the motor running, 1/4turn, after the tick stopped.

At the start of the video, from the front of the motor you can hear it faintly, almost sounds like a diesel to me. Then from the sides you can hear it a little louder, minus the wind from the fan messing up the sound.

The motor has had this sound since day one, Ive had the motor for about 5 years, with a grand total of about 15 hours of run time, and only two wheeling trips. One to sandlake, where the motor ran great, and one trail ride, where i wasnt very rough on the motor at all.

Im just curious if it is something i need to worry about, or just run the motor and see what happens?

All suggestions much appreciated

just had a friend who tracked down hit tick in the front.

he used 2 long a bolt on 1 spot on the cam gear :doah: was hitting the cover every rotation.

we pulled the h20 pump / p/s pump / alt / every thing off . still there. he pulled the coveer and there it was tiny scuff mark . but huge noise outside.

replaced it with 10 doller set up from comp cams bolts/ lockplate. fixed the problem 100%

same can be said for a dented front timing cover.

good luck.

oh ya he had cheep chrome crap cover on it also.

I had a similar experience, but the noise was louder. Had just done the rear main seal and when I re-assembled it the dust cover for the SM 465 had a bent tang. Every rev the crank end would hit the tang...sounded like a really bad rod or main bearing knock.

Your 383 sounds just like my 6.2...

i put a screw driver to the intake, for a stethoscope, and it sounds like a frog croaking. Im sure its coming from the top end. and im thinking its the cheap roller tip rockers.

Sounds like valves are loose still. You should run the engine and adjust them like this...

1) Loosen rocker nut until clacking noise is heard

2) slowly tighten rocker nut until noise goes away then go an additional 1/2 turn

I was just starting to do this, I did two valves. But i stopped in the middle of it to check this thread lol. Got the little deflector clips too.

While i had it running i popped one of the deflectors off and revved the engine to see if oil shot out of the push rod. It didnt. Should it?

Ill go do all the valves right now.

Did all the valves, and no change. The sound didnt seem to much louder with the valve covers off.

It almost sounds louder in the video, than it does in person...

Im half tempted to say the hell with it and just run it and see what happens. Like i said ive had it out two times already. Plus one little rockcrawling comp, that last about a 1/2 hour. And she still seems to run strong...

Its very irritating to have a brand new engine making some goofy sound. I will never buy another engine from Cylinder head specialties.

Any other suggestions?

Thx for the replies so far

kind of hard to tell from the sound in the video...are you sure you don't have exhaust leaks?

i had what i thought were noisy lifters/rockers on mine and it turned out to be header exhaust leaks...i installed Percy's aluminum gaskets and they are great.

its had that sound since day one. Ive put a few different header gaskets on it.
Up close it really doesnt sound like an exhaust leak though.

Have the roller tip rockers been on the engine the whole time? What brand of lifters are they?

Yea theyve been on there the whole time. I belive they are just the summit brand.

When i had the valve covers off they really didnt seem to making noise. It really sounds like its under the intake manifold.

I wonder about just throwing a set of new lifters in it, just to see what happens. They arent that expensive.

Im rackin my brain trying to think of what could make the noise.

On an engine with good oil pressure, the oil coming thru the oil hole in the rocker, can shoot as far as the headers, or inner fender, especially when you increase the rpm's. At the very least there should be a good amount of oil flow. This also depends on how much oil pressure you have.

I quit setting valves with the thing running, makes too much of a mess.

could it be a flat cam lobe?

find a stock valve cover...glue a gasket to the bottom....
cut out the top of the cover to access the rocker nuts...
place on engine with a couple of bolts...adjust away....cuts down on the oil bath...:D

It has 60 psi when i start it up.

When i was at sand lake, after running the truck for awhile, i think it went down as far as 35-40?

In the garage warmed up, at idle, i never saw it go below 60.

I have a mechanical gauge on it, so it should be fairly accurate.

If the cam bearings are bad, i wouldnt have decent oil pressure correct?

Im going to poke around some more tomorrow and see what i can find.

It could just be a bad lifter. My new engine I built (well 2 years old now) ended up have 6 bad lifters. They would bleed down and make all kinds of noise and I finally tracked down the bad ones and swapped them for some new ones and fixed my problem. It really sucks to have to tear into a rebuilt engine just to swap a bad lifter but I guess it could be worse.

I'm kind of in the same boat here as you mention about the bad lifters on a brand new rebuild. I was fighting some bleed down symptons shortly after the build. I readjusted them like 5-6 times, finally getting them to sound about right, but still have one up towards the right front giving me grief in the mornings.

I DID switch from that thick oil (20/50) i was using for the heavy towing, long drive from Phoenix to Indiana,,, switched in some full synthetic 10/30, and when first starting in the morning, it will tick for a couple of revolutions then stop.

Heck there for awhile, even while idling, it would start ticking until i rev'd it building oil pressure, but would come back.

I too also noticed a "Diesel engine clatter" type sound coming from mine while i had the valve covers off, but figured it had something to do with the roller cam and lifters. Doesn't really do it any more, and it's definately not as bad as whay i hear in your video.

BTW, you SHOULD definately have oil coming out of the push-rod hole, unless there's something i don't know about with roller tip rockers. I went to Checker/Schucks/O'Reily and bought the little cheap set of rocker arm clips that pretty much block off the oil flow, at least enough to prevent making a mess.
