couple more ideas...
We used cosmoline on exhaust pipes at the parts stores to prevent rrust while they were waiting to be sold..I suppose vaseline or chasiss grease would work well too,but are messy as hell...
I got some tape made by the 3M company my dad used on natural gas lines --it was designed to protect pipes from rusting after being buried..I still have pipes in my garden for stakes that were scrap he dug up and replaced in the late 70's that were wrapped long before that..despite being out to the weather for 20+ years since,if you peel back the tape, the paint underneath it is still shiny as new!..not much of the tape has lost its adhesive either..
I wrapped the journals of a freshly ground crankshaft with it,and stashed it away for 5 years before I used it...looked like it was turned yesterday still, and I used no oil or grease..another crank I stored with chassis grease and baggies zip tied on actually rusted UNDER the grease, and was so pitted after a few years I decided to sell it cheap at a swap meet(steel crank for an early 327)..I bet that tape would work,if they even make it now..they might not, since PVC is taking over..
