i am looking at lockers for my front d60 what is the difference between them? which one is stronger?

i want a locker instead of welding this time so maybe i can actually turn my rig lol

any suggestions? i beat on my rig so don't want anything thats going to fail

I've seen a lock right in a D60 fail. Had a dozen trips on it with 42's.

I say Detroit or ARB, pay once and forget about it.

I have a lockrite in my 60. It had held up well with 42s and the heavy xzl's that I have. They are pretty tough for the money in a d60.

I just got a Spartan for my d30. Its basically the same, but the pins are alot bigger. And it has extra hole so you can install some pins to lock the springs in place while you install it.

I would bet that the Spartan is a bit better only because they most likely fixed some issues that the lockrite design had.

I would run a Detroit, but I have 30spline outers, and if one where to break and destroy a $600 Detroit. I would be alot more pissed than breaking a $325 cheapo.

all i can say is if you play in snow or conditions like that go selctable like arb . ya cost more up front but its open or locked.

my plow truck is open diff for a reason and my play toy has arb's in it for best options all around.

I play in the mud 90 percent of the time rocks will be in my future though if I break a shaft will it most likly break the locker?

Not always but it will eventually if its a detroit. Mine is broken and I have broken several shafts

4 or 5 years on my lockright, prob weld it once I break it though.

I did a lot of research on D60 lockers, at the time I read about more D60 detroits breaking than D60 lockrights.

I've ran a Lock-right in my D60 for going on 10 years and have never had a problem. Ran skinny 38's for several years and then 39.5's for going on 4-5 years now. I've also broken two 30-spline stubs and one OEM necked-down inner during this time with no issues. However I don't run a lot of horsepower either.

I do know two guys that have a broken a Lock-right in a front D60 but they were in heavy trucks with big-blocks, 42's, and beat on them pretty hard. Both of them switched to Detroits and have ran for years with no problems. The one did survive a broken 35-spline Spicer stub with no problems.

Overall I have absolutely no regrets buying the Lock-right, but if this one ever breaks I likely will go with a Detroit.

Regarding the pictures comparing the pin size I don't really understand what the point is. Not like this pins transfer all of the torque or something. All they do is provide a place for the spring to slide on that pushes the side gears apart. The dog teeth on the side and center "gears" are what transfers the torque.

The pins break alot in lunchbox lockers like this. In all of them. When they break the locker quits functioning correctly.

The Spartan is way louder than a lockrite. It bangs and pops more but they seem to hold up about the same. I have put a couple of Spartans in d44s but never in a 60. The spartan is an easier install. But both are pretty easy to install.

A lockrite seems to hold up better to repeated shaft breaks than a detroit. But the detroit is the overall stronger component.

If you are breaking shafts you will eventually destroy your detroit. The lock rites seem to deal with the shock load better for some reason.

If I can afford it I will go ARB in my front end, I will probably just try to find the parts to fix my detroit. But if I were to do it again I think I would just throw a spartan in there. Cheap and they hold up failry well. Reason for the spartan, they install easier, you know 5 minutes is important in life :D

do these "lunchbox lockers" install like a 14bff Detroit would? Replacing the spiders and that's it?

Basically. They go in the stock carrier. Sometimes you have to grind a touch on the stock carrier to get them to fit but not much at all.

Where the 14 bolt is different is that carrier splits apart Dana carriers don't

Why is breaking shafts so bad on a Detroit I don't understand?

The break shock loads the locker for an instant and it shears the teeth on the outer gear off. Of chips them or weakens them so they break later.

I have seen the whole outside gear split.

Detroits are pretty well known for this in front 60s not really sure about other axles I would assume it would pretty much be any Dana style axle
