Speedo cable, distributor, leaking

On the back of the speedo there should be a little piece of steel that the cable goes through. When the cable is properly seated, that little piece holds the end of the sheath in, and prevents it from dropping out. If this piece of steel is missing, the cable can fall out of the back of the speedo.
They make a product called Kable-eeze (or some spelling along those lines) for this purpose.
From what I've heard, graphite, while used quite commonly, is abrasive, and is not a good idea in this application.

I'll have to look into this when my new cable comes. I ordered one from gmpartsdirect and have no idea whether it will be lubed or not (find out when it shows up).

I have that metal piece. What I *think* is going on is that the cable itself (not the sheath) is slipping out enough to make the noise. But I guess conjecture is a moot point now that I just ponied up for a new one.
