The speedometer in my sons 72 k5 is bouncing about 5-10 + or - around the speed you are actually going. I've googled it and every body says to pull the cable, clean it, and relube it. But NOBODY can decide what to use. I've heard everything from wd40 only to antiseeze. Is there a lube made for this or is it a pick one and run thing....

what have you guys used with good results?

Parts stores used to sell specific speedo cable lube in small tubes, maybe they still do??...I've used vaseline on one that squeaked, but I ended up replacing the cable and housing eventually,it had a spot in the spiral casing that was rubbed thru and it frayed the inner cable all to hell..might save time and money just getting a new cable--but it might be the speedo itself thats faulty too,unfortunately..

I just lubed mine and Oreilly's had a speedo cable lube (I think with graphite and some liquid lubricant) for about $3. I've also done some research and found a lot of others use "white grease" as a lubricant.

You need to take your dash apart and disconnect the speedo head to pull the cable out though. It won't pull out at the T-case end due to a retainer ring at the speedo head.

Can I throw in another question....my speedo bounces so much you can hear the needle pinging on the little pin on the bottom.

Now I always thought that my cable was to short and binding or it needed to be lubed,so I lubed it with wd40...still bounces.

So do you guys think the cable is to short or the speedo is hooped?

Sorry for the hijack Shady.

Oh mine is a 77

I checked online at o'rillley's and must of missed it. Checked summit too:dunno: My search foo must suck:doah: I'll be going to o'rilleys today:thumb: It's just down the street. Thanks guys.

Now after I get it to read I have to see how far off it is so I can get a correction box.

Should I flush the cable housing with degreaser or will that be bad down the road?

I guess you need to eyeball the routing of it and judge whether or not you have any really sharp turns...

I didn't see it online either....only at the store itself. Look around in the "specialty tool section" and also the "grease" section. Ask for white grease too and look there. My store was moving it around at the time so they had a hard time finding it.

If you're needing lube to get in/out of your speedo you might try a larger size, more modest swimwear or a new diet. Please do not attach pics.

No real sharp turns but I think it`s to short...I don`t now what truck the cable came off...but it could have been a two wheel drive truck. :dunno:
I got Lott's of clusters but no more cables to try.

You would`t happen to have one in your parts stash would you?

I've been playing around with mine and here are the main areas that would cause it:

- The cable too old and just worn out - Replace

- Check the cable routing for pinching points - Straighten it up or Replace cable

- If no binding, try lubing the cable

- If cable looks good, take off at T-case, put a drill on it and spin it (in the correct direction....which I think is reverse). Have someone sit in the cab and see if the speedo is still bouncing.

- You could then replace the entire speedo for a junkyard one (and you can swap over your odometer tumbler if needed)

- If it still is bouncing, you need to look at the speedo gears in your T-case

Only one I have that I know of for sure is off my crew cab, 2WD with the SM 465. PM me and I'll send it to you...

Thanks! But I Don`t want to wast your time if your cable isn`t any longer than the one I have. I`ll try a couple things with it.

Speedo lube.....
no way I would have clicked on this thread if it was in the lounge. just sayin'
:D

I've always used graphite for it, but always preventatively. never really had a problem with them myself. GL

My speedo used to bounce up and down too-when a pretty girl came by:blush::doah:...........No, actually I had the same problem and changed the cable. I think it was all in the speedo itself. I upgraded to electronic autometer gauges since most of mine were crap. Autometer rocks!

The title was done JUST to get people in the thread:haha: I knew you'd all be kinda wondering........ And I expected at least a few posts like the one below:thumb:
