Ok with all the talk about spindle nuts and loosening and such lately. I thought i would bring up different styles.

I have two 14 Bolts one has the thin ring with all the tabs that you bend over the outer nut to keep from loosening, and the other has only one thick spindle nut with a key.

This is the first axle I have taken apart with the one nut and key. Both other 14 bolts and my 60 have had the multi tab ring you bend down and my 10 bolts all had the rings with holes in them.

Which of these styles is preferred? I would assume the one with the key as it seems simpler than trying to bend those tabs down, and they don't seem real secure even though mine hadn't backed off at all for over three years.

What is the setup for the keyed style?

Discuss :wink1:

I have the keyed style and i set it up the same as the others (torque nut to 50lbs. while rotating hub, back off, tighten to 35lbs. and then back loose no more than 1/4 turn and align key slot then put retaining clip on).

Hmm retaining clip. I don't remember removing anything like that. I backed the nut off a little and pulled they key out. The axle is from an 84 CUCV pickup.

There should be the nut, then a key, then a small metal clip that engages the threads of the spindle to hold the key in place. Without the clip the key would fall out and the nut would come loose.
